I am still getting e-mails from various forums- primarily firearms collecting related- about the Photobucket bombshell. Lots of very important reference material has been lost for good, in effect. Some of these guys will not try to re-make what can no longer be accessed, through lack of ability or just disgust, it doesn't much matter. Now I'm reading that some people cannot even d/l their own albums.
Has the happy medium with another service been reached, or is it still catch-as catch-can?

Yeah, I had had some old game reviews and gun collection posts on several forums that I'm sure had all the pictures linked to photobucket. However, they were so old that I doubt anybody was still accessing them, so I haven't bothered to go back to fix them. Being lazy, I just went on photobucket and deleted everything I had. All that stuff was on one of my external hard drives anyway.
For light users like me, Imjur seems to be the favorite free choice for hosting. However, if one wants a bit more sophistication, some editing tools and maybe the ability to make folders or albums to categorize their photos, then one might have to pony up and pay a small annual fee. I read one recommendation on one of the forums from a guy using Imageshack, which has a beginner level account for like $20 per year. I used to use them when they still had a limited free account with hosting, but that ended sometime last year.
Good luck

Some of the images may have the "pay up" image of Photobucket but I've found that I can still download that and it'll give me my old picture back. What's annoying is that PB resized the original pic so now the downloaded one is low-res. My current solution is to upload pics to a draft page of my blog and use that to link pictures back to forums or other threads where I want them shown again. These are stored on my Google Album archive.... and while it lumps them all in one location which annoyed me to no end initially, I discovered that I didn't care... I'm using the draft pages to sort out pictures by topic so I use that to get a bit organized and just not look at the single location in the Google Album where they all are. I'd still like to find a solution like PB where I can upload pics to specific folders, get organized that way, but for now, well, the blog works for what I need it to do.

What does that matter Brun? It happened. Raising questions about anyone's naivete...pointless. All the savvy in the world doesn't fix it now.

I always think uploading content to free hosting sites and expecting it to be permanent seems rather naive.
If anything's that important, the only way of being sure it remains accessible is by buying and hosting it on your own domain. In the grand scheme of things it's really not that expensive. PB had a good run and changed their policy overnight. I guarantee you that had they given even a week's notice, things would've turned out different --- meaning people would've pulled their pictures out tout suite. As for buying/hosting a domain, well, why pay for something if you can get it for free? If there was absolutely, point-blank no other solution, then yeah, fair enough, go buy a site and host. But this is not the case.....

What does that matter Brun? It happened. Raising questions about anyone's naivete...pointless. All the savvy in the world doesn't fix it now. Because people are discussing alternatives, and unless 'very important reference material' is hosted somewhere that the user has ultimate control there's a realistic chance that the same thing will happen again. As for buying/hosting a domain, well, why pay for something if you can get it for free? If there was absolutely, point-blank no other solution, then yeah, fair enough, go buy a site and host. But this is not the case..... Nothing wrong with free hosting if you're not worried about the risk of it suddenly becoming available. I'm just pointing out that there are more secure and permanent options which may be worth considering.

So "important reference material" is the bone of contention. I read your message 5 x 5.

My wife lost a bunch of pictures this way last week. Pretty #%&*$# of PB to do this IMO. She wanted to pay to get them back but I convinced her not to. After we looked she still has most of the originals before upload to PB so it wasnt much loss but I can see how some people are basically being held hostage for blood money by PB over this. I cannot comprehend how anyone is putting pictures on any website and then deleting the originals. I have my originals as well as several backup copies for anything that I ever put on Photobucket.

The way PB handled it was terrible, and should be a text book case on what not to do. I do feel that using any free hosting system is always a risky prospect, because you never know if they may just go out of business or something. Unless they're getting a lot of ad revenue, it's not likely it would make enough money to survive (times change - heck, even Sears is practically going out of business).
I set up my own domain years ago because the free hosting sites just felt like a pain to deal with, and I'm glad I did. It's not for everyone, though, and while not expensive, it's not necessarily cheap. I think I pay around $150 per year for my hosting and website registration, but I'm sure there are less expensive options. One of the things I do like is having my own email domain and able to manage it.

Regardless, it doesn't make PB's actions any less sleazy. PB has been getting worse and worse over time... slower to access the site, lots of ads to wade through, but we took it all in as part of the package for "free hosting." Then they do this virtually overnight? Yeah, sure, thanks!

I agree that how things transpired did suck for the users and reflected poorly on PB, but to blame them for the loss of original data is not taking responsibility for the security of something that you value.

I'm sure that "loss of original data" is not the issue here, but yeah, let's focus on the people being shafted, shall we? Let's not even discuss that PB wants something like $400 for what was just a few weeks ago a free service. God forbid we focus on the fact that something like this was sprung on unsuspecting users. Let's focus on why said users didn't keep backups of the originals. That'll be more productive. Personally, what was on PB wasn't even "of value" as family pics were never on PB.... what was there were stuff for simming and gaming websites and while they are not "of value" as personal pics, they are still a product of thought and effort... had PB ended up with a more reasonable hosting price scheme, I'm sure some would've figured moving such pics to be too much of a hassle and just pay a yearly subscription, but $400? I'm sure a whole lot more have told PB where to shove it.

My earlier post was in response to the post from Master. That is the only context that is relevant to what I said. And how is my response to your post out of context? You're the one insisting on shifting the focus to the users of PB, instead of PB themselves. The original data is not "lost," some users have reported not being able to get their pictures back from PB. Master's wife seems to be one of those people.... but no! It's totally her fault for trusting PB (which worked fine for YEARS!!) and for not keeping backup of those pictures, right? Remember: PB was not hacked. They did not have their servers fail. This was a result of a change PB implemented virtually overnight.... but yeah, we should blame the end-user for not having the foresight of keeping backups of their pictures.
