Having parents living with you can be just as nerve-racking, things you'd rather your mother-in-law not hear, but it can happen when you forget she's moved in with you. biggrin

Or getting up to check the thermostat or grabbing a glass of water (clothing irritates me when I sleep) and forgetting that we have temporary or permanent guests. I tried to remember when our parents were in the house (old people use the john a lot), keeping my bathrobe by the bed as a reminder, but sometimes I'd forget and have to make a quick departure from the hallway. Fast forward to recent times...I love my folks but I'm glad their living area is detached from the house, if only by a few feet, as I'm sure they are as well.

My 90 year Dad lives with us. We have always been night owls. He goes to bed at 9 PM every night, and is awake at 6AM every morning. I love having him here (my brothers and sisters and I just feel better that he isn't alone at night), but it is weird sometimes. He gets up a lot at night to use the bathroom. The dog gets up with him too. He thinks we are crazy to be awake in bed and watching TV past midnight. Old people, LOL !

Take a bit of salt, wash down with some water, quite a few who run salt deficient diets, and in summer heat you need more. You'll know almost instantly after taking, and if that ain't it, you lost nothing, a most simple fix.

I have gotten rid of it by magnesium supplements but have had better effect with potassium.bananas,sweet potato and avocado are your friend here.Potassium supplements wont help as its a measly 99mg per pill but you could take alot of them.A banana has 430mg so its easy to get.

I eat a banana and avocado daily, a sweet potato about every third day or so. Note that each of these foods are listed at one place or another as natural Viagra, so it fits in nicely with the other advice here. biggrin

My potassium is a little high right now at 5.3 mmol/L (normal is 3.5 - 5.2) per recent blood test, although I'm being told not to worry about it. Just another reason to get myself off the potassium BP medication.

That's not so bad, I drown lots of stuff in olive oil, probably why my cholesterol is a little high. Salt, no can do, not with high BP. I had no problem ditching the salt, as long as I have plenty of black pepper. On avocado it works, not so much on watermelon.

I'm supposed to avoid salt, so if that can cause it, that might make sense. I never use salt, but of course still get it by other means.
Can't stand avocados, but I do eat a lot of bananas and other sources of potassium. I was cramping up really bad when working out a while back, so now I drink a lot more water and get a lot of potassium and have a magnesium supplement a few times a week.
I'd be surprised if this was diet related with how good I've been for the last few months. Seems like my legs are over stimulated after the stationary bike.
We had some fun last night and it does seem like the RL was less severe, but still enough to be annoying.

I'm sure it can be frustrating. The mattress suggestion sounded like a good idea, but it sounds like your fine on that. Have you been mattress shopping lately. Holy cow, there are some really expensive ones out there . It feels like you are buying a car now. The drugs that are out there now for the condition seem to be a little over the top. My pain management doctor has tried to give me a few on that list. (Major surgery complications and radiation treatment damage to my spine). I just go with the heating pad after a hot shower. The side affects seem far worse than RL. I find a bowl of Salted Caramel Chip ice cream helps me be still.

Also try dill pickle juice. Depending on what is causing it that can help amazingly well.

No kidding! A decent mattress is ridiculously expensive these days. We looked at those memory foam and adjustable ones. You're right, I've spent less on cars.

I've heard of that for muscle cramps too.

I need to re-read my prescripts for side effects. I don't take much, but they did put me on a diuretic that could have something to do with it. That relates to the salt issue.

I am on two diuretics for post surgical lymph edema. I hate those damn things. Those cause all kinds of issues. RLS could be one for sure. Sometimes my CBC test are low, and I have to take prescription Potassium. Tastes awful. I miss the days of my youth when I could hit Taco Bell at 2AM (after the bars closed), go home and sleep like a baby for 3 or 4 hours and then put in a productive 8 hour day without breaking a sweat. Sigh...........

I agree with Master,,,, pickle juice,,Which I at first thought was B.S. helped me a lot...I try to avoid prescriptions when ever possible another Vet with leg issues convinced me to at least try it and damn it's working for me..The constant tingling from the knee down cost me many nights sleep

Abstract
INTRODUCTION:

Anecdotal evidence suggests that ingesting small volumes of pickle juice relieves muscle cramps within 35 s of ingestion. No experimental evidence exists supporting the ingestion of pickle juice as a treatment for skeletal muscle cramps.

METHODS:

On two different days (1 wk apart), muscle cramps were induced in the flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) of hypohydrated male subjects (approximately 3% body weight loss and plasma osmolality approximately 295 mOsm x kg(-1) H2O) via percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. Thirty minutes later, a second FHB muscle cramp was induced and was followed immediately by the ingestion of 1 mL x kg(-1) body weight of deionized water or pickle juice (73.9 +/- 2.8 mL).

RESULTS:

Cramp duration and FHB EMG activity during the cramp were quantified, as well as the change in plasma constituents. Cramp duration (water = 151.9 +/- 12.9 s and pickle juice = 153.2 +/- 23.7 s) and FHB EMG activity (water = 60% +/- 6% and pickle juice = 68% +/- 9% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction EMG activity) were similar during the initial cramp induction without fluid ingestion (P > 0.05). During FHB muscle cramp induction combined with fluid ingestion, FHB EMG activity was again similar (water = 55% +/- 9% and pickle juice = 66% +/- 9% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction EMG activity, P > 0.05). However, cramp duration was 49.1 +/- 14.6 s shorter after pickle juice ingestion than water (84.6 +/- 18.5 vs 133.7 +/- 15.9 s, respectively, P < 0.05). The ingestion of water or pickle juice had little impact on plasma composition 5 min after ingestion.

CONCLUSIONS:

Pickle juice, and not deionized water, inhibits electrically induced muscle cramps in hypohydrated humans. This effect could not be explained by rapid restoration of body fluids or electrolytes. We suspect that the rapid inhibition of the electrically induced cramps reflects a neurally mediated reflex that originates in the oropharyngeal region and acts to inhibit the firing of alpha motor neurons of the cramping muscle.


tl;dr
pickle juice stimulates the brain to stop the muscle cramps
