Some movies I just want to see on the big screen. The ones that benefit from it. Not comedies, dramas...usually scifi type movies. I hate crowds, but at the times I usually drag my wife to the movie, there's rarely many people in there. Sometimes none. I love those 1:00 movies. LOL
Now that the cost of 2 going is the same as buying, I do hold off sometimes. I'll buy it without worrying about it. Compared to taking my family, it's less than half the cost. TV's are big now, sound systems are really good, you have a kitchen, your favorite chair/couch/bed, a bathroom and you can pause it. Home is where it's at. At least for those of us that like to rewatch movies a lot.

... the sound quality is so much better in a small home theater than in a huge, loud cinema. The last 3 or 4 times I've gone to a movie theater, I took ear plugs and gladly use them. Learned my lesson in one of the Star Wars prequils, which they were playing stupidly loud. My ears rang for 3 hours after I left the cinema.

Went to the movies Friday. Original 35mm print of "Nighthawks". Yup, I see old films at theaters, pretty often, maybe 8-10 times a year. Many of those movies seem to be about fun and a good escapist experience rather than a showcase for a director's or actor's ego or another advancement to a sequel franchise. Today films have one twist after another, twist twist twist, nothing's as it seems. Give me a good hook, a character I can identify with, and one or two surprises so I can actually be surprised instead of expecting the hero's blind mother to be a cross-dressing space alien with X-ray vision, from Planet Poledance.
And many of the old movies are arty without being preachy or pandering to an audience, holding their hand for 90+ minutes. few directors today seem to understand that. or maybe they do, and rather producers want the $$$$$.

My favorite movie of all time is Jaws. The dialogue was great. The suspense was perfect. The scenery was intense. The characters were engaging. The musical score was perfect. Could you imagine that movie being made today? You know the point of the movie would have been global warming is making sharks eat people.

TV's are big now, sound systems are really good, you have a kitchen, your favorite chair/couch/bed, a bathroom and you can pause it. Home is where it's at Since I have a 65" TV across from my recliner, a high end 5.1 channel surround system and the kitchen only about 15' away, I rarely go to the theater anymore. My dogs, however, would probably prefer that I go to the theater, especially for the loud action movies.

I still go to the theatre. On average 4 times a month if there good movies, and if not, they bring back old ones, sometimes with celebrities presenting it. I don't like going to the chain theatres like Cinemark or Loews, it's such a ripoff compared to the theatre I go to. It is restaurant theatre that I've been going to since it opened in 2002 (1st movie I saw there was "Phone Booth", last movie I saw there was "Dunkirk." This restaurant was showing movies with dinner well before the other chains started, and it's very local. The only one that's not a chain. The decor is based in Mann's Chinese theatre and every screen has a different theme. They even have a little museum with Hollywood props in it. Celebrities as I mentioned will come and present their old classics. We've met Ernest Borgnine there when he was presenting "Poseidon" along with Pamela Sue Martin. We met Tippi Hendron presenting "The Birds", William Shatner doing "Wrath of Khan", Tia Carerre doing "WAyne's World" and "True Lies", Tony Curtis doing "Some Like it Hot", etc.
Price of a ticket? $8. The only requirement is you buy one thing from the menu. Doesn't even have to be an entree. Buy a bottled water for $3, and it counts. Recliner seats, etc. Heck if I'm stuck watching a chick flick, I can order several shots of tequila to ease the pain, haha.
Besides I still love the big screen experience, watching in the dark with a bunch of strangers and feeling the vibe of laughing with, crying with, yelping with, and rooting with other complete strangers. There's some vibe about that that you don't get watching from home. That's a big draw for me.

I go see the new Star Wars movie every year or two...and that's it. I don't even remember the last movie I saw at a theater that wasn't SW...maybe Avatar in 2009.
65" Samsung TV, Kenwood surround sound, Netflix or Dish On Demand, pause button so I can pee...lol. No need for the silver screen anymore other than I have seen EVERY SW movie at a theater when it came out.

v6, boNes This aspect has changed for me. I distinctly remember the audience getting very vocal and into the movie during the 80's and 90's but I'd say sometime around 2000 or so things changed. I go to the movie theater pretty often and the audience for the most part is dead quiet except for the occasional rowdy teenagers. I mean, I vividly remember the audience erupting into a cheer when Vader killed Palpatine at the end of ROTJ, also when Kirk and Sulu destroyed the Bird of Prey at the end of ST VI and also when Arnold defeated the T-1000 at the end of Terminator 2. I can't remember the last time I experienced that but I know it was before 2000.

Since all the children have gone their separate ways, I have nothing to induce me much to go to the cinema. If we we do go it is to a small cinema in a local town that after many years of dilapidation and closure was restored to it's former Art Deco glory. Just attending is an enjoyable experience in itself with seating round tables, food served and a bar at the back of the auditorium As to the questions in the poll I wonder how many like myself, ticked them all.

Voted "no rush", but the primary reason is I cannot bear the sound volume. It's just stupid that you cannot take your family out to a kids' movie without a pack of earplugs. I go about 2 or 3 times per year maximum, but that is only because I cannot keep saying no to my wife

Why is the sound so loud?
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

But I do remember times when there was "audience participation" too. I know there was one even recently but I've seen so many movies as of late I can't recall which one. Although, to further your ROTJ story, I remember that happening after the lobby scene in "The Matrix." It was dead silent and people were just in awe then suddenly, applause just erupted as they came to their senses. Haha, that was magical. v6, boNes

Why is the sound so loud?
I think they do it to keep people awake. I think it is ridiculous that things like a car door shutting or a screen door swinging open have to be so loud. It has really got comical.

We went to a Star Wars movie premiere back in 2008 and they played the movie so loud people were leaving the theater. My son who really wanted to see the movie was in tears his ears hurt. We left and complained to the theater. They told us they have no control over the volume with these movies. Took a long time for my son to want to go to the movies again.

They told us they have no control over the volume with these movies. That sounds like BS.
