Hello all, I am looking at getting a new HOTAS set up. I have really wanted the Thrustmaster Warthog. Is it worth it or should I go for something else. I am worried about quality control with Saitek. I know there is no twist feature on the Warthog so are rudder pedals really necessary. Any advice would be great.

Depends on purposed use, (IMO) for WWII dogfight VKB Gladiator PRO, VKB Gunfighter, VirPil T50 or Baur BRD will help your aim more than Warthog.
None of these is proper HOTAS (no throttle released yet) but can be used - in modern games - with any other brand throttle.

What flight simulators do you fly most of your time? Do you find flying let say Bf 109 with F-16 grip as immersion breaker?

It depends... flying the A-10C or the F-16C, I cannot recommend the WH enough.

Flying other sims, I dunno. If you fly civvie sims, then a yoke setup will make more sense. If you fly WWII or helos, then a FF setup will be better.

I am wanting to really get into the A-10c and of course the F-18 when it comes out. Right now I am using the T16000M. Its great for elite dangerous and some sims but setting it up for the A-10 has not been easy.

Well, if you're serious about the A-10C, then the WH is a no-brainer biggrin

The Warthog is a good all around HOTAS (minus the pedals). Its only real issue is varying degrees of stiction. I my case, even after regreasing and by hand smoothing of the internals, it was enough for me to look elsewhere.

If money is available and you don't mind waiting a bit, I highly recommend the VKB Gunfighter and pedals over TM. Build quality and feel are far superior to anything TM has ever produced. The only two issues with them is 1) no throttle (as of yet) for a HOTAS 2) their rudders do not have integral toe brakes (but do allow a software form of it).

I'd +1 Pugio's statement but I only have one issue with other superior gimbals --- non-F16 stick. Do you know if the VKB can work with the WH stick grip?

In fact, it can: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3127061

I'm using the same setup as the above pic. The extension is optional, which when removed makes it about the height of the original warthog. My only complaint with VKB would be availability at this point (and possibly price). You also have to buy a separate adapter for the warthog grip to use on the gunfighter, so it's not an easy task to switch between the gimbals if you desire. The Gunfighter itself is a cut above the warthog gimbal.

The Mongoose T-50 is also a step above, and can accommodate a warthog grip (without any modification I might add): http://i.imgur.com/w4qjpq2h.jpg

So it works with the WH stick grip WITH and WITHOUT that extension? Cool!

I may have been a bit lucky with the WH... never had to open the stick assembly and while I do feel the center "clunk", it doesn't bother me very much or maybe I've learned to work with it? I don't really notice it very much and I do air-to-air refuelling almost every night to relax... Still nice to know what's out there and how much it's for.... y'know... Santa may be feeling generous this year smile

I wonder though.... I use a profile for my TM WH to use it with BMS. Won't having a different throttle and a different stick mean I'll be using profiles all over the place?

As Heloguy said, yes you can. I bought my Gunfighter with an included WH adapter. You need to open the Warthog grip, however, to install it, and you need to change out one of the Gunfighter's cams and adjust the springs to for it to work properly.

I ended up not using it though. I find I much prefer the lighter spring movement and short button pushes of VKB's KG 12 grip over the Warthog's.

For the last point yes. Target will not recognize the VKB base of course. An issue with VKB is their profile editing software's GUI is crude and unintuative to put it nicely.

Option to avoid Warthog crap gimbal - but have a "A-10'ish" HOTAS.

Buy Warthog throttle stand alone
Buy Warthog grip standalone (without base) - Thrustmaster sell for around $120.

Buy Baur or VirPil Mongoost base - both is "bolt and play" for Warthog grip without additional work.
Buy VKB Gunfighter for use their base - this option will cost more as require additional electronic adapter, and require disassemble Warthog grip for install this adapter, do a firmware update and load profile in EPROM controller.

Throttle remain compatible with TARGET keymapper soft, joystick not - what is not really issue for DCS A-10 that have LUA files that allow real A-10 HOTAS functionabillity (minus for trim HAT, that is POV controls by default)

Yeah... the best option for me at the moment is just to replace the TM WH stick gimbals...
