Maybe Edward James Olmos can be brought back but now he's the police chief instead of just a lieutenant?
He can end every police press conference with "so say we all".

This is going to be The Fast and The Furious : Miami, isn't it?
I mean, the elements that made Miami Vice iconic will be difficult to mix again successfully - the fashion, the music, the cars...in the 80's there was still a lot of wow factor to all that. Think about what fashions they will show that people would like to wear....what artists will people will look for to hear and see acting in the series, what cars will people see and want to make fiberglass bodies of to pretend they have the real thing. I will definitively be too old for the demographic that will look at any of that.

Completely agree with Bib. Miami Vice was a hit because it was a perfect reflection of its time and it capitalized on that.
A Miami Vice "updated" for 2017 society and popular culture will NOT work imho.
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
Sonny will be gay, his partner will be a trannie, the police chief will be a pacifist, and the drug dealers will be Republican power mongers, including the corrupt mayor. If they remade it today, that is.
A well crafted reboot set in the '80s might be viable, given that '80s culture is somewhat hot right now, and that the original left a lot of room for improvement in some ways.
However if its set in the present day, forget about it!

I really do think that this will basically be Fast & Furious: Miami as Bib mentioned previously.

The only two series reboots which actually work(ed) that come to mind are Battlestar Galactica and Hawaii Five-O. BSG worked because Eick and Moore merely took the original premise seriously, something that would not have been possible back in the late 70's/ early 80's. And the original 5-0 was a little bland IMO, so the new show has been somewhat of an improvement (until it jumped the shark with their "North Korea" episode).
Miami Vice or Magnum PI (another iconic 80's show rumored to be getting a reboot *shudder*) were too specific and too special to be easily rebooted. Unless you are using the original cast and tell their story 30+ years later. Like X-Files did. But for that, a mini-series format would be more suitable, IMO.

I've not seen the original BBC versions but both "The Office" and "House of Cards" had a lot of commercial and critical success.

Look how much style and class just oozes out on this scene...and this was just the pilot episode! Can you imagine a "filler" scene like this in a fast paced modern series?
As a side note - I remember watching that as a young lad and being completely mesmerized by this episode. So different than all the other cop shows of that era.
I also remember our RCA console TV with stereo speakers (wow!) , the wood finish on the Cable TV set top box with big red numbers for the channels, and the JVC VCR (with the big color buttons on the front) I was recording this in in all it's glory...so many remote controls in the living room! That was the time when a show, technology and culture all came together.

Vin is a good actor, but yeah, you can't do MV without the 80's. Maybe they can pull that off, toned down a bit to not look like a parody. The last attempt didn't go over well. MV was a fairly hardcore cop show though, just punctuated with the fashion of the criminal element and exotics. And the rich detective with a yacht and gator. LOL The cars were real, Don finally sold the white Testarossa a few years ago at Barrett Jackson.

We don't know yet if he will be on the cast. His production company will be making the show so he may just be working behind the scenes.

Nope...it was not a real Testarossa on the first episodes. It was "original' to the show, but it was built by a customs shop -

Where does "Miami Vice" get all their neat cars? They rent some and build some. Sources include individual collectors, auto specialty shops and car fabricators like Roberts. The original Ferrari look-alike used by Crockett was spotted on a lot in Newport Beach by the show's producer. He knew the car had the perfect image for his lead character. The car was a custom-built machine using Ferrari-design, fiberglass panels adapted to a 1980 Corvette chassis. And some real Ferrari hardware integrated with the car added to the Ferrari effect.
When the new model Ferrari Testarossa came out, it was decided to update the Ferrari on "Vice" to the trick-looking new machine. Plus, the real Ferrari North American people got a little miffed that these fakos were getting so much attention. They offered to supply two real Ferrari Testarossas for the show. The Testarossa was Ferrari's latest model and one would be used regularly and one would be kept as a backup. The cars were supplied to the producers painted back, but when they didn't show up well in night scenes, they were later painted white. To create a car that would perform stunts, "Miami Vice" producers turned to the Robert Motors Co., which had specialized in safety-oriented stunt cars for the movie and TV industries.

That's pretty standard, you couldn't expect them to risk the real ones all the time. I didn't know they started with just fakes though. There are also some pretty convincing Fiero owners that went overboard makin lookalikes.
After watching the early seasons of Miami Vice recently, I have to say that the show has held up surprisingly well overall considering, although much of the humor is cringeworthy, and the pacing and action scenes often betray the show's age.
I swear "Noogie" has to be the single most annoying character in any T.V. show ever!
It should also be remembered that only the show's first 2-3 seasons were really good throughout, then it kind of jumped the shark, Testarossas or no. I mean c'mon, seriously, aliens!

Who remembers the episode with Phil Collins? That's probably my favorite one.

Agreed! Phil Collins was one of the very few musicians who could actually act pretty well. David Bowie and Ringo Starr also come to mind.
