Need advice. I want to get back into WWII combat flight simming. What is the latest and greatest WWII flight sim that has a single player mode? I'm not interested at all in MP. Something more recent than the original IL2 1946 which I have but won't run correctly on my newest 4K PC. I heard CLOD was a disaster and even if it has been patched, I have no patience for loading a bunch of patches to fix it.
I did see something on the Internet about an IL2 Moscow and IL2 Stalingrad, and both are supposed to have single player. Is anyone familiar with and would endorse these sims? Are they standalone or do you need original IL2 or CLOD to run 'em? I'm not getting much satisfaction from individual WWII DCS planes.

Il-2 CLoD don't require manual patch anymore, is updated automatically through STEAM in few minutes.
The original SP contend is little and bad done, are some good missions/campaigns done be users, but not much.
IL-BoS/BoM SP was impaired initially trying "reinvent" the genre adding gameplay from "AAA" games (XP points, unlock's...).
But now count with PWCG (from RoF) for automated generate missions and two official scripted campaigns (one payware) and some user made contend.
What both games offer for SP still less that the old iL-2:46, but is the option for now.
Since CloD cost very little, no reason to don't get both games - that represent different theaters and frame time.
Thank you for responding. I think I understand almost all of what you said except the following: I don't know what you mean by "AAA" games (XP points, unlock's...)"

I think he's referring to the likes of Call of Duty or Medal of Honor and the like where players get XP per game and unlock new guns/outfits/whatnots...

Ah, okay. I understand now. No I wouldn't like a single player flight sim programmed like a console game. I guess the only thing to do is go back to CFS2 and CFS3? If IL2 series is the only thing out there, then the shelves are empty of quality WWII flight sims. That is really sad.

The XP Points and Unlocks in Battle of Stalingrad and Battle of Moscow do not really matter any more, since the Developter realized by now, that this was not a good Idea. There are no more things to unlock and the game should get a full fleshed out dynamic single player campaing later this year (The current one is pretty crappy).
As already mentioned, there are a few scripted campaigns with static missions, that are pretty good. If that is enough for you, you should give it a try (maybe wait for the next sale), since the flight physics and graphics are pretty awesome. If not, I'd wait how the coming single player campaign turns out.
For Cliffs of Dover the campaings by Desastersoft are the way to go if you want good single player content, but those are payware. And as Sokol1 said, Patches are automated by Steam (but AI still behaves strange sometimes), so installing is not a big deal.
If you ask me you cant't go wrong with any of them.

The current "fave" is BoS/BoM (IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad/Battle of Moscow). Here is their website. https://il2sturmovik.com/about/The DCS WWII game has turned into a joke. It's become a cash grab for the devs, as they sell each individual plane and even the Normandy map (which was supposed to be FREE, per their Kickstarter campaign). There was also supposed to be a limited version of the game released as Free to Play, which will now never happen. I wouldn't play any DCS title now if they paid me. I hate being lied to. Some folks say that, because one member of their partnership left, they were no longer obligated to deliver on their promises. That's BS. The other FULL PARTNERS had just as much responsibility to deliver the game as promised ( and now years late) as the one who left. Battle of Stalingrad/Battle of Moscow/Battle of Kuban look to be the future of WWII simming, at least as far as games which offer single-player content. -Irish
