Thanks, that was neat.

Quite different than when I was in the artillery--just 2 years short of a half a century ago. My battery was heavy--consisting of 2 eight inch howitzers and two 175 mm guns, but they made a hell of a lot more noise. The army retired the heavy stuff many years ago, so nothing bigger than 155 MM now. I'm guessing that's a 155 mm from the ammo size, but it sounded like it was suppressed. I guess that's possible now.

Cheers

Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

Correct. It's a M777A2 155mm. Jointly developed by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps to replace the M198 155mm towed howitzer. The main feature of the M777A2 is the possibility to fire the M982 Excalibur GPS Guided Projectile

I'm hoping that the 8 inch howitzers are in storage somewhere.

Probably not, MLRS and HIMARS can do everything the old 8" SP could and then some. DPICM is more effective than 1 big bullet 98% of the time, and for the 2% there's the GPS-guided unitary warhead rocket that's even more destructive.
