The reviews on Steam are rather mixed at the moment. Is this game worth getting at the current price? Is it going in a positive direction? The recent reviews seem to indicate that the game has become somewhat aimless in it's development.

If I could play this game like Age of Sail, where I design a scenario or have hundreds of historical scenarios to choose from, I would love it. But I have no interest in role playing, gathering resources, modifying/upgrading my ships etc. I just want to boot some head with the ship(s) of my choice engaging the ship(s) of my choice in the environment of my choice.

Having said all that, once you get into a fight, it is a great game/sim. But because I can't play the way I want to and can't stand playing the way they want me to, I almost never play this game at all.

That is unfortunate . . . because, otherwise, this should be my favorite online game (what with being a big Horblower/Aubrey aficionado).

I have it installed and 'aimless' is also how I feel about the direction NA is going.

The ui probably doesn't help but I don't really understand how to play properly and, as stated, the amount of grind seems incredible given the resources required for construction.

The entire game is unfortunate. It's got some of the best sailing and naval combat in that era and once in a while can be a lot of fun.

The problem is the open world MMO aspect of it, PVP fights are completely one sided (some small exceptions to duels and some special areas), and the the grind is a bit harsh. Even if you do grind a while it can take forever just to find and/or build a ship with the completely player driven economy.

I've always wanted this game but lament the fact that they made this game a multiplayer/mmo game. I hate that because otherwise it looks beautiful and according to you all and others its a beautiful age of sail sim. I can't stand the online direction. Will they ever plan on making a single player mission designer at the very least? If that were to happen and it was made workshop compatible so that people could create and share whole campaigns and interesting missions then I'd get it in a heartbeat.

If Naval Action insists on being MMO (which is probably a mistake in the first place), it needs to be an MMO like Star Trek Online or Knights of the Old Republic, where (a) it is no overly difficult or time consuming to get through the early levels and (b) you have plenty of content available if you just want to wade around in the single player or cooperative play mode.

I wish, though, this had been down more like an upgraded, more historically accurate version of Sea Dogs, something where you could play a semi-fictional, but historically based dynamic campaign as a pirate or naval officer.
