As a general rule, remakes stink and fall well below the quality of the original film but every once in a while there's a nice surprise. Here are some that immediately came to my mind,

"The Thing" - John Carpenter 1982

"The Fly" - David Cronenberg 1986

"The Count of Monte Cristo" - Kevin Reynolds 2002

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" - Phillip Kaufman 1978

"The Blob" - Chuck Russell 1988

Scarface 1983 - Michael Mann, a reimaging of the Depression era original.

Heat 1995 - Michael Mann again, a big budget remake of a T.V. movie he'd made called L.A. Takedown.

Excellent picks Crane.

I think most people at the time of release had no idea that "Scarface" was a remake.

Scarface from 1983 was directed by Brian De Palma.

I'd add Tony Scott's Man on Fire from 2004

Airplane! is much better than what it was closely based on (actually, they lifted the whole screenplay and it's pretty much verbatim) than Zero Hour!

The Italian Job
1938 Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. I can only imagine it was better than previous movies since it's a favorite of mine. Plus it had both color AND sound.

...and I'll just copy my others from last year. wink

Casino Royale...come on, Peter Sellers doing a Bond comedy? Plus, other than the nostalgia factor of the Connery 60's movies, this one with Daniel Craig is possibly the best Bond movie. Or close, up there with FRWL.
King Kong...(arguable, but IMO) 1976 and subsequently 2005. '05 was more enjoyable than '76 due to the time they set it in, although it's hard to beat Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange and Harry Housen's stop motion.
Count of Monte Cristo, 2002. It's been made and remade, and I haven't seen them all, but that movie is incredible.
Dracula, 1992. Despite Winona and Keanu's horrible accents, it was a good version and had Gary Oldman playing the role to it's utmost. Certainly better than the cult classics, which are mainly good due to being cult classics.
Cape Fear, 1991. The original was good, but the remake defined DeNiro in the 90's, possibly even more so than Goodfellas.
Flash Gordon, 1980. Because you know you loved it as a kid. Queen. You know it. You can hear it.
FLASH....aah aaaaah...

LOL Raw. I guess I need to keep a journal on all of the thread topics I've started on SimHQ to serve as a reminder.

Don't see a reason to remake "The Beguiled" with Nicole Kidman

I actually watched Zero Hour once and it was impossible to take it serious even though it was being played that way since I saw Airplane first.

How about a thread about the latest hot rock bands from Luxembourg?
