Daily Mail article

It took the bullet 10 seconds to travel. Amazing.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Top 4 sniper 'kills' are by soldiers of gun restriction nations.

Leave the politics out of it. No more warning for you.

How is "gun restriction" being defined here? Unless we are talking about a country like Somalia, all countries have some degree of restrictions on firearm ownership.

We Canucks are used to shooting game with old rifles at dusk or dawn in freezing weather and howling wind all the while keeping a weather eye out for the game warden...so of course we make good snipers smile

^ Yeah, the biggest effort in the Canadian Sniper Training program is spent on teaching not to eat your targets or hang them on a wall mount... :P

That's amazing. I wonder given the stats for the bullet and propellant load, what the maximum theoretical kinetic "kill" distance is, and how close this shot is to it?

What a fantastic shot. GJ man.

I can't imagine how difficult that must have been. I have trouble hitting large steel targets with a spotter and a huge gun at 2000m while using a benchrest. I might shoot 5 or 10 rounds before getting a few hits.

These guys hit a terrorist who may have even been moving around.

I wonder how many shots it took?

At that distance coriolis effect would be rather major, and the wind must have been a nightmare to pin down.

Even mechanically, how accurate can a rifle be over such a distance? What was the MOA of the rifle used?

Four of the top five longest ranged shots were with the 12.7x99 class rifles, with the .338 Lapua Magnum used by the British taking the second place (was the longest shot between 2009 and this recent event).

At that range skill puts you in the box of possibility, but luck finishes the shot. The target has a lot of time to move (even just normal unintentional movement) in that amount of time. Smallest imperfections in the bullet construction matter. Hell, everything matters. Shooting at that range is not good sniper practice. Too much to chance and outside factors. Yes, you can do it, but the probabilities are too low. Snipers expect very high probability shots. That strikes me as Hollywood and ego shooting.

One shot, one kill. No excuses.

How's that? I mean, first off you'd have to be aimed along (or nearly so) a meridian for that to apply in the first place, and second, how could that affect a gun shot?

Seems to me these distances and velocities would be way to small and large, respectively, to involve any real coriolis effect coming into play, but that's why I posted this here - I KNEW some interesting tech details would arise in the thread.

And I know nearly zero about the art of sniper work.....well, relative to people who've studied it or know guns well anyway....
