Single mission 003. Gives me an old Skipjack sub, only MK16 unguided vintage torps and Mk37 wire guided, although extremely slow.

1 Mk37 snipes a cargo ship crippling it to 6 kts. 4 Mk16 spread follows suit. A Kresta charges at me and runs straight onto 1 of the Mk16 on their way to the cargo ship. Hmmm......!

Later found a Foxtrot SS 5000yds away, 2nd Mk37 finishes it. that was a close one...
[Linked Image]

the Kashin DD that was lurking with the convoy came in and i just couldn't get a tracking solution for Mk16 shots. close within 3000 yards, sodded it and fired a Mk37. He fired a torpedo my way same time!
Bandit, 12 o'clock high, Merged! Defending missile torpedo!
all ahead flank, noise maker, full dive, full ballast, going down to 1000 ft.... Torp pinging - Turn reverse!
[Linked Image]

The noise maker and the reversal fooled the torpedo. woot! no idea what happened to my own torp! until i saw the wreck of the Kashin there!

There's another cargo ship way out somewhere. hopefully the rest of the hop is a milk run...

Nice pics. I like having RSR with a 3D upgrade. It's dramatic to see your sub in full dive.

I played 4 of the training missions last night, I think I'll jump into the 1968 campaign tonite. It will be a challenge for me to use Mk16 in combat. I suspect that most people here have lots of time in a WW2 subsim, so y'all know what you're doing with the unguided stuff.

I'm a complete modern naval noob:X so far just playing it like a slow paced flight sim and it seems to work to an extent! must say i'm not a fan of the Mk16 after this mission, it is too inaccurate and the wait for... probably a miss bores me. a Los Angeles and Mk48 is better!

the Kashin was right on top of me, just screen capped 1sec too late and it went into sonar blind spot and disappeared. it was scary...

went on to finish the last cargo ship. turns out there's a Kamov chopper lurking from one of the sunk escorts. one of its air dropped torpedo found me and had to dodge it bloody 4 times. 7 noise maker spent. too tense so no spare mind for pics. anyway that was mission 3 completed. geezus...

Mission 4 is a lot less hectic and a lot more interesting. An Alfa escorts an Oscar SSGN. got solution on the Alfa pretty quick, but it was super maneuverable and had to manually control the torp to guide it against the Alfa's head on turn reversal as a last-ditch maneuver. Man-in-the-loop mode all the way till the end.

The Oscar was sneaky and plays cat and mouse using the thermal layer. lost it for a while and found it above the layer. lost it again and found it all the way at the bottom of the ocean, 1000ft deep. Clever AI! But that's far from the end of it.
went for a steep dive, launched the Mk48 @700ft and set Run Deep mode. was tracking the oscar on sonar constantly ofc and it just went for a fast ascend. followed with my Narwhal sub, while activating the torp to pull it up. i feel like an octopus one hand on WASDXEC controlling the sub and the other on Numpad controlling the torp, periodically on the arrow keys rotating the camera - sod the mouse!
not soon after the torpedo acquired the target, sub sonar lost it. the torp apparently was still tracking it but sonar just couldn't see it. even went for active sonar and pinged twice but no joy?! judging on its trajectory i finally figured it: the oscar is on the bloody surface! ballast up a few times and went for the periscope depth, up mast up ESM up radar, there it is enjoying the sea breeze. bwahahaha.

the MK48 tracked true and hit right between the two props. however the Oscar is still alive with a dead engine. it then went for an emergency blow and just stopped dead on the water. own sub was some 14nm away and sent another Mk48. but reckoned the Oscar must be repairing its damage, when the 2nd Mk48 arrives it coulda repaired and dived. so reloaded tube 1 with a UGM-84 Harpoon and....

first sub kill with an anti-ship missile[Linked Image]

issue: 2nd Mk48 was still running at this time, i think had this been a campaign mission the player wouldn't be able to leave due to weapons nearby. pretending this was campaign mode i had to delete this torp. since the wire is still intact fastest way was to manually control the torp to hit ocean bottom which i did. but what if the wire had broken?
a "self-destruct" mode or something like that so player doesn't have to wait a long time for it to end would be nice.

I really wish they had also developed the actual simulation side of things more.

For now this does not even come close to Dangerous Waters as far as sensors / realism are concerned frown

It was never billed to be the next DW from the time it was announced. Nowhere have the devs ever stated it was going to be either. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges, and it makes no sense to be disappointed it's not like game x when it was never supposed to be like game x.

That is true but from the beginning they stated that it's not going to be a full blown sim like Sub Command or Dangerous Waters. It is a bit arcadey but still it's good that finally we got something in this genre.

Bought it today. I'm a big fan of Killerfish's Atlantic Fleet and so far am thoroughly enjoying Cold Waters. I'm a BIG fan of the old RSR game (as well as Dangerous Waters) and CW has really managed to provide the tension and gaming fun of its spiritual predecessor. Easy to learn, difficult to master.

Just played an hour of an insertion mission where I snuck around 2 Grishas and a Krivak in 150-200 ft of Water. Oh, and there was an ASW helicpter. And an aircraft dropping sono buoys. And did I mention the minefiled?

biggrin

I tried this mission one time with the Sturgeon. Managed to sink 1 sub and 1 surface ship. The rest escaped. Although to be fair the sub killed itself by diving to deep while evading my torpedos smile I hope this gets fixed. It's not the first time the enemy sub did that.

Hi Guys,

Has anyone tried single mission no 5 Beating The Odds ?
if someone has, please give me some tips on how to not get detected.

My sub speed is always <=5 knots, and I have tried to stay below thermal layer (if any),
but always, out of nowhere, there's a torpedo dropped right above my sub.

I do not understand why I get detected all the time,
any tips?
