250m with Iron Sights?

Impressive enough.

Hmm, this might delay your next flight a bit longer? Or are you already working up an over-the-wing mount?

US Army qualifies on a range with pop-up targets from 50 to 300. So out to 300 with iron sights is an Army standard.

Now us old guys have problems with our eyes and iron sights are problematic at ranges beyond 100. I'm needing aids now. Making up with glass what my biology now fails.

Gotta brag on the Corps, my oldest son qualified "sharpshooter" on the M16 at 500 yards with iron sites wink

A good place for online ammo deals: http://www.ammoman.com/

Be sure to check https://www.targetsportsusa.com and http://www.sgammo.com when you go to reorder. Usually have great prices and selection. The Wolf Gold ($290/1000rnd shipped) has worked very well in every AR I've tried, and tends to be one of the better grouping non-match rounds.

How did I know this was a rifle....

Funny thing is I sort of just did the same thing. Been long enough since I carried an M4 and I always like my M16a4 I had in basic. FN made and that thing could shoot! Despite its crappy trigger. Shot expert with it at any rate.

Ended up just building my 1st AR because I sort of miss the things. But I totally get the picking the thing up and its an old friend. Similar reaction when I got my parts together and was holding some sort of mutant M4/M16 ar-15 hybrid. Sort of the middle road between the M16a4 from basic and the M4 from everything else. Best part was that it was paid for with VA back pay. My tradition of get cash from the VA and buy a gun continues.... I consider it pain and suffering compensation.

Farthest shots I've made with an M16A2 on man sized targets was 440 meters, but it was on a downslope, which probably helped out a lot and wind wasn't an issue.

At that distance they're completely obscured by the sights - it's almost intuitive sort of shooting. But prone supported, good light, and a good day can do wonders.

Anything over about 75 - 125 yards and I need magnification. Eyes were great until I got shingles in my eye, and now it's terrible. Plus, I'm freaking old and that makes it even harder. Depending on what I'm doing, I have to bring readers (well they're like bifocal shooting glasses) to the range for the love of Pete. Yes. Old. Not quite oldgrognard old but very close.

I really want an AR as my next gun purchase. Unfortunately, I live in NY which means no pistol grip, no larger than a 10 round mag, amongst other equally ridiculous rules. Don't think I can bring myself to mutilate that platform that way.

Great time to buy too. Entry level models are rock bottom, the higher end stuff is starting to migrate down in price as well.

When an M16 fires, it's the sound of freedom. We all know what the sound of an AK stands for.

Canada, eh!
Noice!

Last year I picked up a Colt Canada/Diemaco SA20, the semi civilian version of the C7. Sadly, I have yet to fire it frown

I've owned both but have since sold my AK-74. The AR is a Corvette, the AK is a Jeep. Both great "vehicles" but just built to different philosophies.

I know, but as a Cold War dinosaur I just couldn't let an AK reference go without a knee jerk response. I still think of all the Soviet stuff as "threat" weapons.

Hell, my parents immigrated from Germany, but I had to select a French plane to build, as I'm fully American. It amused the extended family in the Fatherland to no end, as when I visit I'm always referred to as "the American one."
