US Army qualifies on a range with pop-up targets from 50 to 300. So out to 300 with iron sights is an Army standard.
Now us old guys have problems with our eyes and iron sights are problematic at ranges beyond 100. I'm needing aids now. Making up with glass what my biology now fails.
Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Be sure to check https://www.targetsportsusa.com and http://www.sgammo.com when you go to reorder. Usually have great prices and selection. The Wolf Gold ($290/1000rnd shipped) has worked very well in every AR I've tried, and tends to be one of the better grouping non-match rounds.

Farthest shots I've made with an M16A2 on man sized targets was 440 meters, but it was on a downslope, which probably helped out a lot and wind wasn't an issue.
At that distance they're completely obscured by the sights - it's almost intuitive sort of shooting. But prone supported, good light, and a good day can do wonders.

Anything over about 75 - 125 yards and I need magnification. Eyes were great until I got shingles in my eye, and now it's terrible. Plus, I'm freaking old and that makes it even harder. Depending on what I'm doing, I have to bring readers (well they're like bifocal shooting glasses) to the range for the love of Pete. Yes. Old. Not quite oldgrognard old but very close.

Great time to buy too. Entry level models are rock bottom, the higher end stuff is starting to migrate down in price as well.

When an M16 fires, it's the sound of freedom. We all know what the sound of an AK stands for. Friends don't let friends go Communist.

I know, but as a Cold War dinosaur I just couldn't let an AK reference go without a knee jerk response. I still think of all the Soviet stuff as "threat" weapons. Hell, my parents immigrated from Germany, but I had to select a French plane to build, as I'm fully American. It amused the extended family in the Fatherland to no end, as when I visit I'm always referred to as "the American one."
