I frequently have 2-3 hours of "gap time" at my current job. I have a gaming laptop that can run stuff like Skyrim and Oblivion at low-medium settings, but anything more is pushing it.

I'd like to have a game that I can fire up, play for an hour or two and be finished, or be able to save then continue later on.

I have Steel Beasts installed on it which is fun but also looking for something perhaps more light or even something like a map-view RTS, ala Harpoon or something like that.

Ideas appreciated!

I don't have much time in it but yet but "Battle Brothers" on Steam is now released. I bought early access but still don't have that much time as I was waiting for it to finish. I really like it so far and it has very good reviews. Its minimalist art style though well done and pleasing, you start out as a bare bones squad of medieval soldiers for hire and you do questing and contracts and you have to make better and manage your own mercenary group. Its done in real-time strategy form. Very slick user interface and easy to start and stop. I also really enjoy "Expeditions: Conquistador" which is another great story/historical fiction/RTS game.

Maybe:

Battlestations Midway/Pacific
Jane's Fleet Command
Men of War
Spintires
Kerbal Space Program
Xenonauts

I agree with Coot Expeditions Conquistador is great and also the expeditions Vikings One other one that has quick scenarios is Matrix games Frontline: Road to Moscow is a WW II game that I just play when I want to relax for a bit,,Quickly played scenarios one battle for each city heading towards Moscow,,good for the times I don't wish to load up a longer playing game and progress is saved to be resumed when i want to..Unity of Command is a turn based WWII /Russian front game that's nice Flight Sims are Strike Fighters . low/moderate difficulty These are a few I mess with to take a break from housework/cooking etc..

What kind of games do think you would like?

Hex based?

Real time strategy?

Combination?

I have a few games that I use and an hour or two waste of time.

Commander: The Great War is a good game, pretty light, pretty fast, but still interesting.
Command: Modern Naval air warfare is excellent, and shorter scenarios can be done in a couple of hours, longer ones can be saved. Not sure your computer would run it well though.

Hearts of Iron 3 can be had very cheaply if you like the grand strategy stuff.
Sniper Elite 3 maybe - you might need to step back from ultra settings, but if you can play Skyrim you should be okay.

World in Conflict w/Soviet expansion is a TON of fun. Not hardcore, very cinematic and just a good time.
On top settings it's a lot to run even today, but it has an extremely FULL set of graphics options so you can get it where it runs well on just about anything.

Vietnam '65, each campaign has a randomly generated river valley for a map and it only takes a few hours to complete.

What's that series Magnum always posts about? I always thought it looked like great fun but I've never tried them. Combat Mission or something like that?

The latest Combat missions games are pretty good. If you like more complicated hex based games the War in the Pacific or War in the East or West are involving and have long term replay value. Panzer Corps is a good 'beer and pretzels' game, similar to the old Panzer General games that were popular in the 90s but with better graphics.

I personally am looking forward to Operation Art of War IV which is based a lot on the old OPART games that were made in the late 90s.

Yeah. I'd say anything up to Rome 2 would be playable on a laptop.
