AMD Confirms Vega Launching This Quarter, Shows 8K Video Editing Demo

..it’s coming this quarter [May 30 to June 1 most rumored]..

Vega Architecture Key Features

– 4x Power Efficiency
– 2x Peak Throughput/Performance Per Clock
– High Bandwidth Cache
– 2x Bandwidth per pin
– 8x Capacity Per stack (2nd Generation High Bandwidth Memory)
– 512TB Virtual Address Space
– Next Generation Compute Engine
– Next Generation Pixel Engine
– Next Generation Compute Unit optimized for higher clock speeds
– Rapid Packed Math
– Draw Stream Binning Rasterizer
– Primitive Shaders

..Just a couple of months back we found out that 80% of AMD’s driver team was actively optimizing for Vega. Earlier today we learned that AMD has already delivered full OpenGL support for Vega in Linux...

Really not new news in that a launch in about 6 weeks has been rumored for some time now. Just that they have a more definite rumor smile

Nice to see they've been working on getting the drivers right.

Vega is more than a GPU. Its a "compute unit" also. I expect it to be competitive with Nvidia's best or second best FPS wise. But, a little more advanced in totality of features (some of which don't matter to gamers). Now, what will it cost wink

AMD Radeon RX Vega to compete with GTX 1080 Ti

As well as Nvidia Titan Xp

During an AMA session, AMD's Global Marketing Manager for Desktop Processors, Don Woligrosky, answered plenty of questions and revealed a bit more information about the upcoming Radeon RX Vega graphics card.

In an AMA session at Tom's Hardware site, Don Woligorsky said that Radeon RX Vega performance looks really nice when compared to the Geforce GTX 1080 Ti and the Titan Xp. This certainly sounds good ...

AMD Ryzen AMA

..RAM compatibility is one of our top priorities right now, and we're working hard to get regular BIOS updates until the situation is ideal. Expect a new BIOS .. in May to make memory work faster on Ryzen...

Not brand new news. But, hints that AMD continues to work towards a BIOS update in May that will effectively increase Ryzen DRAM and CPU speeds. Moreover, AMD feels Vega will compete. Compete does not mean "win" FPS to me. It means the overall product capabilities give reasons to buy it over the competition.

id Software Praises AMD’s Ryzen for Its “Super Attractive” Price Point, Says New idTech Will Fully Utilize It

The article implies that since high core counts have become relatively cheap (Ryzen), games will start to use lots of cores -- obsoleting 4 core/8 thread unis (in my opinion). This is no different than what happened years ago with GPUs (example: Vega will have 4096 "shaders", it is rumored -- the first 3D GPUs had 1 or 2 "shaders").

Ryzen 8core is only the beginning, it is rumored (above in this thread). Intel will be releasing 12 core soon. 16+ core is the future, and high-end PC games will be developed for 16 core /32 thread CPUs. To repeat an old fact: XPlane is already using 20 threads (IIRC).

Ryzen 16 core/32 Thread rumored for fall 2017. May be a good choice during Black Friday sale.

Since we don't have everything-discussed "on the shelf to buy", all of the above should be considered speculation and rumor.

Two things on reply to your last 2 posts......

There are very few games that effeciently utilise 4 cores/8 threads at the moment. I think its a bit premature to announce the demise of Intel based on value for money Ryzen hex/octa-core chips for the same reason. Think about it, Intel have a massive market share, if devs suddenly move to 8 core chips and beyond they'll miss out a huge part of the audience and give themselves more work to do creating code that can offload dedicated threads into combined threads efficiently. Ive no doubt this willl happen over time but certainly not overnight and not before Intel have cheap 6/8/10 core desktop cpu's commonplace.

As for stating AMD will 'compete'......they're hardly going to tell anyone they won't be competing. By not bragging about potential performance it looks like they're already resigned to second place.

To be honest, I think that by not blowing away Intel/Nvidia and only creating equivalents I don't think much is going to change this gen. AMD have put their cards on the table now for all to see.

I agree smile

My feeling is that AMD has "caught up" (assuming Vega is good) and is on the right track to "keep up". In a year from now, AMD vs Intel CPU and AMD vs Nvidia GPU will be a matchup between "equally good" hardware.

I believe there are probably no new true technical breakthroughs possible anymore. All we will see in the future is competition among equals.

Buying decisions (for the thoughtful) will come down to price -- so, there will be effective price competition and brand recognition competition (right now AMD has price, Intel and Nvidia have recognition).

So, I am NOT predicting AMD overwhelming Intel and Nvidia. Rather, I am predicting "equality", "competitiveness". In the future, the "thoughtful" consumer would look at AMD, Intel, and Nvidia. But, importantly, even if they pick wrong, they will not be getting a bad deal -- that's what I mean by competitiveness and equality (like buying Mercedes Benz or BMW or Lexus -- can't really go wrong).

My opinion. Not guaranteed to be correct smile

AMD Takes Meaningful CPU Market Share From Intel For The First Time In 3 Years

AMD has reportedly gained 2.2% CPU market share in the first quarter of 2017. This makes it the very first time the Sunnyvale, California based chip maker has made any meaningful share gains against its much larger rival Intel since Q1 2014...

[Linked Image]

Does not look like a whole lot -- but, its a 10 percent gain relative to what AMD had before Ryzen. A 10 percent gain in business is huge.

Notice: Things were closer in 2005-2006. Back in the 90s AMD started WAY behind. Then, they caught up. If AMD stays on the current path and Intel does not "cheat" again, we might be back to near equality in a short number of years.

Samsung to overtake Intel

According to U.S. semiconductor market research firm IC Insights, Samsung is likely to overtake Intel as the world's largest chip maker later this year..

Chipzilla became the world's largest chipmaker back in 1993 and has held the title ever since. But it dropped the ball [in] the mobile market..

Intel still dominates the PC market...

New AMD Ryzen Microcode Update Will Expand Memory Support

..20 new memory registers to enable direct plug and play compatibility with existing Intel compatible DDR4 memory modules..

..a BIOS update will be rolled out this month to enable out-of-box compatibility with a large collection of Hynix based memory modules..

..Remember, the advertised speeds of almost all DDR4 memory kits out there are based on the proprietary Intel XMP — Extreme Memory Profile — standard, which is why running your DDR4 memory at its advertised speed can be tricky on Ryzen, especially DDR4 RAM with Hynix memory. In some cases you may need to increase the voltage to 1.5v, which is completely safe, for it to run at its advertised speed. Another easy knob to turn is to slightly up the SOC/unCore voltage to 1.1...

Good news. Besides the coming BIOS update, they note how to hand set voltages to get to rated DDR4 memory speed. I may try that -- or just wait for the new BIOS. My 3200MHz DDR4 is still at 2666MHz. And, as noted previously, upping memory speed actually makes a significant positive difference with Ryzen. Simplistically put, speeding up memory speeds up some Ryzen clocks on the inside of the CPU.

As noted previously, overclocking the Ryzen CPU itself is very easy and it runs cool. Ryzen is designed to be safely overclocked and AMD provides a "desktop" application to facilitate OC (don't need to enter BIOS for CPU OC). Of course, OC voids warranty. The same desktop application can be used to up-clock the memory to rated speed or OC -- but apparently needs above BIOS update to get 3200 with some memory -- particularly 32GB and up.

Intel Says i7 7700K CPUs Shouldn’t Be Overclocked In Response To Countless Overheating Complaints

Intel i7 7700K owners have flooded the company’s official forum with countless reports and complaints about overheating issue that sends their CPUs’ temperatures shooting up to 90+ degrees Celsius with very minor computational loads and in some cases even when the processors are idling..

..The complaints have been piling up for over three months prompting Intel to finally end the silence and respond..

Intel’s Response : i7 7700K Owners Should Not Overclock, Overvolt Or De-lid Their CPUs

..owners who claim to be experiencing this overheating issue at stock settings without applying any additional voltage or raising the frequency reports PC Gamer...

..the i7 7700K’s main selling point over the i7 7700 is that it features an unlocked multiplier specifically for overclocking. And now owners are being told that not only are the high temperatures normal but that they shouldn’t even attempt to overclock their CPUs. The very same CPUs that were specifically marketed and sold with overclocking as a feature.

AMD Taking The Covers Off Vega, Navi & Zen+ On May 16th

AMD will finally be disclosing more information about its next generation CPU & graphics architectures Vega, Navi and Zen+ in 10 days. ... This will not be a Vega launch..

The Graphics Roadmap – VEGA & NAVI

Vega is set to come out some time before the end of June ..

Navi is AMD’s third generation graphics architecture .. built on GlobalFoundries’ upcoming 7nm FinFET process. .. Navi should land sometime between 2018 and 2019..

Pinnacle Ridge/Zen 2 & Future Zen+ Cores

.. the company is working on several generations of CPUs to succeed Zen which are set to come out over a 3 to 5 year period. These future CPU microarchitectures were referred to by the CEO as “Zen+”...

When one looks inside the Ryzen 1800X CPU chip, one sees its only half full and contains two 4 core units. A gaming 16 core/32 tread desktop PC version of Ryzen has been predicted/speculated for this Fall or Winter. We'll see.

AMD Radeon RX Vega To Have Very Limited Quantities In The First Months of Launch – Only 16,000 GPUs To Ship [worldwide], Low HBM2 Quantities Cited As Main Reason

Humm. Pre-order before the test reports or get nothing. I may opt for nothing since my RX480 is adequate (though slow at times in very-heavily modded FO4 at 2K and ultimate settings).

On the other hand, I may "go for it". We'll see what I do smile

NVIDIA is Not Even The Least Bit Worried About AMD’s Radeon RX Vega – CEO Jen-Hsun Huang Expects The Competitive Position To Remain Unchanged

I expect Nvidia to remain ahead on pure FPS. If Nvidia does not, they will have failed to continue the company policy to always win FPS regardless of cost. We'll see how the overall value (balance of gaming, utility beyond gaming, and cost) of AMD vs Nvidia GPUs shape up -- I don't claim to know the outcome.

For perspective Allen, the others CPUs have had plenty of chance for a mix of opinion over a decent length of time. Ryzen (especially 5) has been out what? a couple of months at the most......its still the honeymoon period. You're hardly going to get someone buying this new CPU and slating it in a survey. The same would have been reported against the Bulldozer range after a month and what a waste they turned out to be!

The claim of the article was that this survey has been going on annually since 2010. The data for each year is the data that year (not the data for the remembrances of an old product this year).

Note: Back when it released, Bulldozer was "panned". The chart shows 6.9% positive and 66% negative -- Bulldozer was the worst score since they started the survey in 2010. I panned Bulldozer also (but bought one).

Back in 2011, Intel scored VERY high also. And, Intel scored high a couple times since -- 2014 most recently. However, as noted by others, Intel has not been releasing big improvements for the last couple years -- due to lack of competition by AMD or anyone else -- so, the "new" Intel chips are less well received because they do not add much.

Ryzen per core is similar to Intel -- but has twice as many cores/threads for a price many can afford (which matters in some applications and will become more important as time passes). So, Ryzen gets good marks from potential buyers. As noted previously, Intel plans to release an affordable 12 core soon to compete. They would not bother to do that if their (Intel's) market research indicated Ryzen was only a "flash in the pan" -- Ryzen is real even to Intel.

All in all, the survey seems about right to me.

AMD Ryzen 16 Core “Whitehaven” Enthusiast CPUs Leaked – 3.6GHz Clock Speed, Boatloads of Cache & Quad Channel DDR4 Support

AMD’s upcoming 16 core enthusiast Ryzen “Whitehaven” CPUs have been spotted. The new processors will come in variations of up to 16 cores and 32 threads and will support quad-channel DDR4 memory..

AMD Aiming For Intel’s Jugular – Rolling Out 16 Core Behemoths For The Enthusiast CPU Market In Mid 2017

a variety of core and thread counts. 16 cores and 32 threads is the maximum, but other configurations with 12 cores also exist. There has also been talk that 10 and 14 core SKUs will also be made available.

..With a 16 core Ryzen in the high-end desktop the Zen architecture is well on its way to displacing Intel’s Extreme edition processors from the performance throne that they’ve long held on to. “Whitehaven” may be the first CPU family from AMD to win the ultimate performance crown since the aptly code named “hammer” architecture hammered Intel’s Pentiums nearly 14 years ago in the form of the Athlon 64...

Well, AMD suckered me -- they got me to buy an expensive 8 core (that I am happy with) -- only to follow a few months later with a 16 core I will probably want. My cup runneth over -- but my wallet is becoming empty smile

Presumably, the 16 core clock speeds in the chart are for an engineering model. The final release may be quicker.

You seem to still be missing the point....the Ryzen CPU's have been out for 2 months. How can anyone possibly look at the survey in any meaningful way? I personally think that it's more 'relief' on AMD fans' part at this point in time, not so much because of Ryzen performance being off the charts (it isn't, it's only equivalent) but simply because their previous products were such a let down. We're not currently looking at a CPU range that has pushed performance to a new level, we're looking at a CPU range that actually shows just how poor the previous AMD products have been in comparison. I'm certain Bulldozer wouldn't have had a 6.9% survey score 2 months after its release.....if everyone knew it was so poor even AMD fans wouldn't have gone anywhere near it.

From AMD:

Computex 2017 is fast approaching so we wanted to share a save-the-date for the AMD press conference, scheduled for May 31st from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Until then, the various sites are speculating, rumoring, guessing, finding possible leaks along the lines of:

Vega will be unveiled and released for sale. A new enthusiast 16 core/32 thread Zen CPU will be unveiled and perhaps released soon thereafter to compete directly with Intel's 12 core enthusiast product. A new AMD motherboard chip series will be officially unveiled and AMD X399 motherboards launched/released to compete directly with Intel X299.

But, until May 31, these are just rumors, speculations, etc.

Speculations that seem more solid (while being speculation/rumor):

Intel is licensing AMD's graphics

Done deal

We can confirm rumours that Intel has given up on Nvidia written a cheque to licence AMD's graphics.

It looks like the veteran GPU editor Kyle Bennet was right when he first reported the rumour, however wild it sounded. ..

AMD Radeon RX Vega Nova, Eclipse & Core Reportedly Launching June 5th – Priced At $599, $499 & $399 Respectively

The low price at the high end may mean that the $599 Vega will not compete directly with Nvidia's fastest. But, no one who follows this stuff thinks AMD will ever win maximum FPS. It's not impossible that AMD wins, but "heads will roll at Nvidia" if they do. As often repeated, AMD normally is selling "bang per buck" with "adequate/competitive" FPS.
