Finally finished installing Win10 Anniversary edition on my Samsung 960 Evo 250GB NVMe drive. Boot up is faster by a few seconds, but I'm having a #%&*$# of a time arranging my desktop icons. I have Fences installed but even on icons that are not in Fences, everything is just laggy. Where before I could just click on an icon then drag it to where I want it, now I have to click the icon, make sure there's a box around it, move my cursor to where I want it, let go of the cursor, then watch my icon move to that location, then watch as the other icons re-arrange themselves. Dragging Fences around is also laggy as hell; I don't think I had this issue even when my OS was on a HDD.

My OS is on the NMVe drive, my deskto "folder" is on a HDD, but is the same location I used when my OS was on my old Crucial M4. So why would it be laggy on the NVMe but not on the M4 considering the "folder" is located in the same place?

What you're doing sounds like it has nothing to do with the drive at all. It sounds like CPU or GPU issues.

Double-check your video drivers and also open task manager and leave it running in the fringes while you move those icons around. See what's up because something seems to be.

Also, run a drive benchmark on the 960 just to be certain. You could have it misconfigured.

You may be correct, Jedi. I've transferred my OS now to my Samsung 850 Evo SATA SSD and while the issue is still there, it's less pronounced compared to when I was using the NVMe drive. I wonder what's causing it? CPU usage does not significantly jump up while moving icons around.

I ran some benchmarks on the 960 and while it is fast, it spikes up to 50+ Celcius and starts to throttle down at that point.

Just for reference.I do not have the latest Windows 10 installed yet (I'll just wait for it to "knock on the door").

Just for reference. My 960EVO outperforms my 850EVO (barely visibly in some cases, to my eyes). Windows desktop behaves as always. Icons move with a quick click and drag.

My 960EVO installs directly under the GPU and runs at similar temperatures to its surroundings. For example if my GPU heats up, it has an effect on 960 temperature. But, I hope the motherboard designers anticipated that and its not an issue.

Just my experience, FWIW.

I had this issue when my AMD Display Drivers were wonky, I had to uninstall them, wipe them with the driver cleaner, and re install newer ones.

I think I found the problem... I used to install my motherboard drivers from the CD that came with it, then just connect online to update the drivers and utilities. This time round, I had disconnected my DVD drive so I decided to just download the drivers from the Gigabyte website.... I think I may have missed a few drivers on my installs. I re-installed my DVD drive, popped the CD back in, installed the old way, and now things are back to normal, but with the NVMe drive installed.

I just want to kick myself now... a week and a half wasted on this stupid problem. And to think I make notes of my installation procedure... but NNoooooo.... some smartypants decided to do it differently this time... idiot!

I figured it was some driver or other. It can be hard to find them all because sometimes MS will fill in with a generic driver if you don't load a specific one. So without seeing that yellow ! in the list, you assume you're good and move on, even though it can be very wrong...like Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. biggrin
