I never have, I'm ashamed to say. I don't have an issue with needles, I don't mind getting blood drawn for annual testing. Just not crazy about the volume taken, although I know it's fine.
I once worked with a semi-retired man who donated every however many weeks he could, just based on recovery time required. about every 2 months. Part of his giving back after retiring.
I know how much good it can do so there shouldn't be any thought involved. Being somewhat introverted doesn't help either I guess, but I went into 2017 wanting to get in the habit despite the
general anxiety about it.
You guys?

Did regularly but with the medicine I take I am not allowed.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I used too.
The blood bank mobile unit used to call to my previous place of work most of my team gave blood.
We got a hours break from work and a cup of tea and a biscuit for doing it.
A worth while thing to do i must see where my nearest Blood bank is.
And donate again no pain involved a couple of times i felt slightly light headed but no big deal.
My wife has a very rare blood group her blood can be used by anybody.

The place I used to work would have the American Red Cross Blood Mobile bus park in the parking lot each quarter so we would go out and donate.

Same here. Now, though, my meds preclude me from donating.

Nope. They won't accept my blood. From my early childhood, I test positive for a myriad of diseases...smallpox, tuberculosis, etc.

Never have, and never will. Was 5 when I came down with Typhoid fever. Was in the hospital for 3 weeks and after 120 blood tests out of a sick skinny kid.
was surprised they could find any. was so sick I could not hold any food down and the hooked me with IV`s to top it off. Missed 5 weeks of kindergarten.
Took 2 months to get enough strength to go back to school. Was a small skinny kid before it, Looked like a starved refugee when I came back even lighter.

Took me 40 years to get past the torture I endured in isolation at 5 years old. Was put in a isolation ward with 20 other beds for kids. The kind they can pull
up the sides and you can`t get over them. Was in that room for 6 days alone. The terror that left me took forever to get over. Cried my self asleep for weeks.
Then making me even sicker. Would scream my lungs out when they came for more blood. Those needles they used back then were like straws. And then
they could never find a vain. More torture.

I need to drop the subject or I will start getting flashbacks again.

Nope won`t give blood, but no longer have problems getting blood tests or any other shots now.

Been doing it for about 30 years- for my blood type they prefer I donate by apheresis. I'm hooked up to an apheresis machine for about 100 mins or so to separate out the blood component they need,
usually platelets and/or plasma. I use to donate every 2 weeks or so but lately it's down to about every 3-4 weeks.

This from the American Red Cross: " The number of blood donors in the U.S. in a year: 9.2 million.
Although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10% actually do each year.
Blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors."

Always great to see new donors in the donation center, whole blood and apheresis.

No I don't, but I think it is a noble thing to do if you can. For some reason, I have very hard veins to find. The last two years have been a nightmare of needles for me. My arms end up black and blue and bruised after every blood test, IV, hospital stay, etc.. I have had veins fail with being given IV drugs, causing my arms to swell up like balloons. Even my chemo IV port had problems. They go in the top of my hands and that hurts. I have had to have IV's put in my feet. The hospitals usually have to call "the pick team' to get a line in me. I think we will all have a loved one who will need blood at one point, so good on ya if you give.

Yep, I donate a pint about three times a year or so.

Mostly when the blood mobile is parked outside of WalMart and I've got some time for it.

They like my A Negative, as apparently it's not very common.

I like to think it's spreading my life essence into others, which will prolong my life. Or let me become a ghost.

Good on ya Dart, Uncommon blood type helps others. I give too, but I'm A+ (about as uncommon as dirt).

Do it Raw. Just do it!

It is a blood bank after all. If you ever need blood, you get a discount. At least around here you do.

I even had some of my blood kept for when I needed it for an operation. So I got my own blood back.

Thanks for donating while you could, F4UDash4! smile I think most everybody in their lifetime will need a blood (red cells, platelets or clotting factor, or plasma) transfusion.
I needed one about 20 years ago(auto accident). My thanks to all blood donors- past, present and future but also including those who wanted to but circumstances, illnesses, etc. prevented
them from donating.

Apheresis donor donations can help out in particular, cancer patients, serious accident victims and those with open heart surgery. I assume you had to have a few transfusions, Dash.
Glad another donor's donation was there you help you get thru your chemo. smile

** Raw Kryptonite ** : I've done a few double donations during an apheresis donation- double red cell(2 units) or double platelets/double plasma, usually they ask me if I can once every few months.
A bit of juice and water, some snacks there and to go and I've never had any problem with the volume of the donation- dizziness or otherwise. I'm 6'2", and 230 lbs so that
might help. Oh, it bothers me NOT looking at the needle as it goes in during any donation. I guess I want to know when it goes in and the quality of the technique of the plebotomist inserting
the needle. smile

I suggested for a double/double donation the Blood Bank provide an In-and-Out Burger gift card($10 or so) on the survey in the canteen at the end of the donation- no word yet if they'll implement the idea. smile

Oh, I have watched as they stitched me up (and stitched myself up), watched as they debrided the gunshot wound to my knee, lanced and drained an abscess, and all manner of medical mechanics on me, but I simply cannot watch a needle going into my arm.

Oddly enough, seeing the needle in or getting taken out doesn't bother me.

Just the putting of it in.

I've given blood and plasma on a few occasions but like Raw Kryptonite, I also don't like needles. It's been a few years since I've given blood. I'm O positive (the most common blood type).

I never have, but I guess I should, as I'm a universal donor.

Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
Not allowed to give blood, not enough clotting agent in it.

My father, brother, and mother all gave blood and my brother got a lot of it back when he was in the terminal stages of his cancer. They had to give him it as his marrow was not producing it, he said it made him feel like a vampire, the blood was cold and it made him feel cold to his bones. The last time I seen him alive the nurses were just preparing him for another transfusion, he stopped it early once I had left to drive my wife back to Belgium, he went home and he passed away later that night.

Glad to see the responses.
I don't mind needles, I got over that at an early age in the hospital. I wasn't caged like Jim though, yikes! My experience was for kidney stones, so I welcomed the pain med shots. LOL
Feeling crappy with allergies and crud this week but I think I'll head in when I'm somewhat back to normal. Turns out there's an office near by so it won't even be much hassle. I'm curious about my blood type, all I remember is it isn't rare.

I actually need to, I have too much iron and I need to get it purged out to keep it from settling in my liver and screwing up my enzymes.

However, I've not been able to for over a year now because they won't take your blood if your pulse is over 100, and mine rarely is. According to my phone, it's currently between 99 and 101, and I've been sitting here the last 30 minutes on my PC doing emails and stuff. When I've been driving to the blood center it naturally goes up to 110-120 when they check me.

I think I'm going to see a cardiologist finally.
