I have a laptop running windows 10 and I installed the FA-18 with the update fix and the Team Super Hornet V4 all in installer. I can load up the sim but get no sound and when I load a mission I get a CTD. I am running Janes F-15E with no problems, any idea what could be wrong and how to fix this?
Has this been resolved? I got it to work okay on Windows 10 after fiddling around with dxwnd. It's a work in progress but I can share where I'm at with it if you're still having trouble getting it to run.
Just a heads up, I followed Doggie's post on how to get Janes F-15 running on Win10 first. So some of the background programs like dxtweak or Nglide may be necessary for FA18 also. Here's the link to that thread
1. I used the free TSHv3.06 download. I installed to documents, not program files.
2. Download dxwnd. I used the most recent version (it was the only one available).
3. Start dxwnd in administrator mode and it should bring up a small mostly blank box Click "Modify" then scroll to "Add".
Leave almost everything default, except these changes:
4. On the "Main" tab set path to the .exe file you woulsbuse to start F18. Under "Generic" set to Run in Window. "Position" to desktop center.
5. Under "Hook" add MFC42.DLL to Additional Modules.
6. Under "Input" set Directinput to Hook dinput and hook dinput8.
7. Under "DirectX" select suppress DX common errors and flip emulation.
Here's the tricky part:
8. Hit "Try." A small window will appear. Click maximize window twice, and you should have a larger window with the small window still visible. Click the small window a few times and you should see the main menu. I went to options and turned off videos and never had the start up window issue again.
It should work! Once you start a mission the window may be maximized. Again, work in progress. I still get CTD's after exiting missions but thats the better side of mission to crash, right?
Also, I get the impression this dxwnd is a useful tool but I basically used trial and error. Someone with more knowledge may get this game going well.
Thanks, managed to start it up, using your instructions, much appreciated! I will also try to fiddle around with the tool and get back to you if found out something. Cheers

Every few years I have a go at this, hoping against hope that something might have changed and it'll work again. I have been able to get it to run using DirectXTweaker version K (it also appeared to work with version J), as follows:
If you download the last two files (save link as...), rename to remove the .png extension (only way I was able to upload), and use 7-zip to extract. This is the DXT utility.
Set up as shown in images 1 - 6.
Set up compatibility mode as shown for DXT and F18 executables.
For me at least, it runs without any graphical glitches whatsover, with TSH or stock 1.01f. Unfortunately, there appear to remain what I suspect to be timing issues caused by running on today's much faster CPUs. Time appears to run a bit faster than real time and this appears to vary depending on the mission. I believe this causes several annoying issues, such as AI aircraft being unable to land on the carrier, refuelling issues, carrier "crabbing", etc.
Maybe someone who's more knowledgable might have some idea as to how to fix this.
There was no way I was able to get this running back when I first upgraded to W10, and I don't recall ever being able to run without some sort of graphical problem. So I can only guess something has changed since then. Maybe this is progress...
After playing around with this a bit more, it's not really practical, getting quite a few random crashes. Also after tinkering with nvidia inspector I've managed to make the cursor (in cockpit) not visible and can't get it back. Still, nice to see JF 18 again on a modern W10 PC.
need to unzip 001 and it will unzip 002 if everything goes well, these are not 2 separate zipfiles, they work together.
Hippo, thanks for the info, I gave it a try and its working more or less. I have low fps almost everywhere, need to understand why, also have the crash after mission. I will also try to work out something.

Can't understand why you're getting low frames. I am able to run on a triple monitor nvidia surround setup (res 6040 x 1200) and get around 100 fps. Such a shame that it's not really playable.
Likely nvidia driver version related... try different versions of the driver, rollback is very easy to try different ones... that's what did it for me - I get 80-100fps.
just like hippo, I give every year a try at Jane’s FA-18 either on my W7 rig or my W10 laptop. As far as W10 is concerned, no joy with DXTweaker : the window is black (except on the path boxes), what makes it impossible to change the settings. I tried in admin mode, with Aero disabled, to no avail. The game starts OK with DXWnd, no menu crash or menu display issue. But I can’t figure out how to set the window size to fit my screen (fiddled a bit with the parameters within DXWnd, no joy). And last but not least, the infamous AA slowdown is back...
Has any of you any idea about how to fix these? Any help welcome.
Well, I got tired of tweaking, so I installed Janes FA-18 on the XP partition of a W7/XP dual boot. The GeforceGtx950 runs the 334.89 driver, launching game through DXT and I have a nice sim with no banding, no tanker jiggering, no carrier crabing and no AA slowdown. Should be enough.
For me F/A-18 works just fine on my Win 7 64-bit laptop. All I did I installed the latest official patch and added Windows 98 compatibility option to the exe. On Win 10 it crashes though, even with DXwnd.
Hi guys, just a small update, I managed to get it run on dgvoodoo2 (2.54), win10 gtx960 latest drivers. The problem now is the menu, (click on the frame, click in the window a couple of times, the usual stuff). 3D is perfect. I try to find out how to bypass dgvoodoo for the 2d part, as its perfect in native win10. will keep you updated.
