Always curious what my fellow WOFF'ers are up to in the digital skies in regards to their pilot careers.
I have a lot of favorite planes, favorite squadrons/Jastas, and favorite periods of the Great War in the air.
Normally I have a lot of careers going to reflect this but I have decided to limit myself to 5 active careers - even this may be a little much but eh. I get in certain aerial moods depending what WW1 aviation history book I am reading at that moment. Have decided to go two British, two German, and one American.

But...but...

If you could only have one career going what would it be? Favorite plane? Time period? Squadron?
Dropping bricks in 1914 in a BE2?
Eindekker to beat back the Allied onslaught in 1915?
DH2 fighting to win the skies back in 1916?
And 1917...the pivotal turning point in the war both in the air and ground. Alb? Nieuport? Camel? Se? Spad? What for the bloody to and fro of that year? The year the pattern the War would take was established.
Or the high drama of 1918? Massive and desperate air battles with the Allies furiously trying for the knockout blow and the Germans basically flying and fighting to the last gallon of gas in a losing struggle.

I have mine. What is yours?
Pick one!

April 1917, Jasta 5 or 11, Albatros D.III. That must be my favorite combo, although I enjoy almost any period-aircraft combination in this wonderful sim. Flying RNAS 1 and Tripes,1917 would be a close second in the top list.

My absolute favorite is the second half of 1916 when the Albatros DI and DII first appears. Generally with Jasta 2 because they go there first. Next would be the first half of 1917 in a DIII. I also love the Tripe and the DrI.

I do only one career at a time. I generally alternate sides - German, then British, then German, then French...

RNAS flying Pups or Tripes, such a joy to fly. For me, they are the best planes in the sim.

Well ArisFuser I knew I liked you.
March/April 1917 with J11 is my very, very close 2nd place choice. In fact, if I take flight time, combining board games - Richthofens War and Dawn Patrol in the pre-computer era, RB3d, and WOFF, that is far and away the career I have spent the most time with.
And oddly what I have the most literature on also - the Germans are certainly not under represented in the history book department. Probably spurred by the apparent universal fascination with MvR.

However despite the fact that my mother was born in Germany - so half my family is there - I feel a little traitorous picking them as #1. Weird I know but I am weird.

So...tough call but...drumroll please...if I had to pick one and only one it would be:
56 Squadron in May 1917 flying the Se5.

I have always liked this plane, time period, and squadron, and the book "High in the Empty Blue" - basically a day by day Squadron history, kind of cemented that choice. Great book and highly recommended.

For hair raising adventure, especially during takeoff, try Jasta 18 beginning in mid- March 1917.
They are equipped with the Albatros DIII early.
They are based at Halluin/Rekkem field in Flanders and during this time and for months to come, the front lines are practically in their front yard.

You can takeoff through an artillery barrage if you are so inclined.

I also enjoy the RNAS squadrons as even a rookie will be selected to lead at times.
I am presently flying with RNAS 3 in a Sopwith Pup.
They receive the Sopwith Camel (Bentley) on July 31,1917.

Salute,
Tango

The Bentley Camel is an awesome bird. I had hoped an RFC squadron would get some but I have not found one and I think that was an RNAS thing anyway.

Unrelated to this post - but for posterity(!) my 5 careers will be:
1) 56 Squadron toward the end of April 1917 with Se5's
2) 60 Squadron in January 1917 with N17's
3) J11 in mid-March with Alb DIII (Early)
4) J11 in March 1918 with Fok/Dr.1's
5) 95th Squadron (Hat in the Ring) in April 1918.

I've enjoyed attempting to stay alive (desperately) in Nieuports with 1 Squadron in mid/late 1917. Usually suicide but I like the challenge.

1 Squadron! Another favorite flying Nieuports all the way to 1918. I like the Nieuport series.
Think I'll change 60 to 1 Squadron for the "5."

Duke, I've been wondering lately if I'm the only one with pilot ADD. I commit to a great campaign, then create another, then another, the another, so on....

Sometimes it'll be months and I've only played most of them once or just get distracted with another. It's definitely hard to just pick one...or ten.

Yes sir it is indeed.
Too much WW1 coolness in WOFF I reckon.
And a lifetime of study and reading on my part. Plenty of time to develop favorites in everything!

Oh the rabbit hole of never ending character background creation...every pilot has a story down to family lineage. A tedious hobby but enjoyable nonetheless.

Yes I am also a Triplane fan from way back in the cardboard and paper days.
Used to be kinda lukewarm to the WOFF iteration till a couple of patches ago when the (overly IMHO) gyroscopic tendencies of the engine were brought under control.

It is still though the one career I fly better at the more I consistently do it as the FM is quite unique.
The N17 is somewhat like that also but not as much.

Oh yea. I always have a background going for all my pilots that starts at the pilot creation screen with name, rank, birth location, etc.
I also find that a historical knowledge of the squadrons history and personnel really adds the the "back story/immersion" of a campaign. I always have a slight pause when the day dawns on the date I know a great ace will not be back for dinner that night. Yea...I'm a WOFF geek.

Bloody April 1917 in a DIII with Jasta Boelcke

Always my favourite.

Not too fond of Entente careers but if I did it'd be early '17 with RFC40 in N17's.
Then be posted back to England as an instructor before the SE5's turn up.

Any squadron flying Pup's 1916 to early 1917. Nothing against Hun's but find myself rarely flying them. In their pretty painted machines they make such nice targets! Rarely do I have more than 1 campaign going. Fly till I die which happens often.

I'm with MFair, in that I can get immersed with only one campaign at a time. Currently it's flying a Nieuport 11 in late 1916, anxiously awaiting a Pup. I've often wished that transfers could be made fully game-controlled so that I would not be so tempted to avoid interesting but horrid machines.

Left to my own devices, I'm fond of the SE5a until the D7 appears.

I generally fly for the RFC or RNAS, but like to have a backup German pilot for rainy days in the DID campaign. When flying for Germany, I inevitably start in late 15 or early 16 and get killed on Eindekkers. But making it to the early Albatros D3 era is a joy!

One career? Fully focus? Hmmm...
Guess I am always up for an adventure and it might be cool as I have never had the discipline to only have one going at a time. 56 Squadron on April 23 1917 here I come. And it's supposed to rain all weekend. Bonus!
Just can't pick up a book on another Squadron/Jasta for the duration but luckily I am due to reread High in the Empty Blue anyway.
