K.D. Lang singing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah brought Cohen to tears when watching from backstage. There has never been and never will be a more perfect rendition of this amazing work than you will see in this video.

I'm really liking some of these Allison Krauss songs, going to harvest this thread when it's done.

Also Amy Lee (Evanescence), this song ("My Immortal") is as haunting as Sarah McLachlan's "Angel", IMO...

Been listening to Cocteau Twins since 1985 and the very first CD I bought was This Mortal Coil.

I submit this for beautiful female singers.

Two things...

1. I'm disappointed that my personal version of Evanescence's "My Immortal" doesn't have the edgier Rock ending like in the video. Hmm... Now I think I want both versions.

2. I'm impressed with you gentlemen that you can enjoy a softer side of music, some can't. I've had friends in the past that don't get it, music *has* to rock/thrash/rap/be head-bangable. But then, I've not always chosen good association, best I be a loner with a small group of good family.

Some music (like in this thread) is best enjoyed alone IMO, relaxed under dim lighting, preferably over headphones. I added a couch to my man cave mainly for that purpose.

Another voice, Kate Bush. From the movie "She's Having a Baby" (1988) which scared the crap out of me!

Kate Bush was great. Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs) was another great female voice. But hey, I'm just a sensitive guy.

That's kind of a country southern thing. It's a style. But I agree with you and Panzermeyer that her voice is nothing special. To feel she is something special, I think requires an affinity for her genre of music. I'd rather listen to Kellie Pickler than this woman.

Annie Haslam & Renaissance. They play some kind of progressive folk, I really dig the bassist! Influenced directly by the great Chris Squire.

The scat vocals quoting Jarre's Doctor Zhivago score were done by an orchestra on the album and some live shows, but the orchestra was too expensive to bring for the whole tour.

She sang Down to the River to Pray for the soundtrack, but that was sung by the congregation at the baptism in the movie.

I think she also did the seducing siren scene with Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch singing as a trio the voices of the sirens.

I like Kate Bush a lot and in my opinion what really made her special wasn't so much her voice but her artistry and the fact that she wasn't afraid to reinvent herself.

She was similar to David Lynch in that she didn't care if her "weirdness" scared off people.

I think I appreciate her impeccable pitch and tone, no matter what genre of music she sings. I can't think of one song where she sounds off pitch. Her ability to transition vocally is opera like.

I appreciate vocals more than I do the music. There's several classical singers that have stood the test of time. Most modern singers have help with autotune. With that said, christina aguilera has never used autotune, and considering her huge vocals, is an amazing accomplishment.

She is not in the movie but sings one of the songs in it.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of her music, but Lady Gaga is actually very capable, vocally:

And I'd prefer that she just sing it as it's written, but I think this rendition of the National Anthem shows her voice abilities:

I like some of her songs. She's one hell of a musician, not just singing but playing and writing. That's more rare these days as so many grow up simply singing. Good singers are a dime a dozen, but those who really learn music and manage to appeal to the masses are impressive.
Gaga and Pink have both done some impressive live performances on tv...doing seriously physical acts while singing incredibly well. That's not easy. I couldn't walk in a straight line and not sound like it, but they managed some crazy stuff while singing.
