How many of you here have done the DNA background test at Ancestry.com or some other similar geneaology site? I did the one at Ancestry about a year ago and my top 3 DNA areas of origin were,

Iberian Peninsula 31%

Western Europe 22%

Italy/Greece 18%

Pretty much what you expected?

Not done anything like that over here but where I live in SW UK there's supposedly a level of Spanish DNA from armada wrecks and similar in Ireland.

Yup! My dad's ancestry is from northern Italy and my mom's ancestry is from Spain so my results were not surprising at all.

Probably have to be a little careful doing this stuff, mind. Your ancestry matches received family history but I'm sure there's potential for surprise in some results!

Not even interested. My mother even pushed us to try it. We are, who we are, I am good with that. Have enough other stuff on the plate to keep me going.

That's pretty much the way I look at that, and ancestry in general. Who I am and what I am now is they way it is, and learning about my distant ancestors isn't likely to change that. Unless I find out I'm heir to a throne with a ton of money coming to me, it's not worth the effort.

When I see the ads where the woman starts out, "I thought I married an Italian," it sounds like that was her goal, and now that he's not Italian, she's disappointed. I'm wondering if she's going to leave him after that, so I'm not sure it's a good way to sell people on the idea.

In my case I was curious about my ancestry because it was unclear when exactly my mom's family and my dad's family came to the New World from Europe.

Something to me just doesn't feel right in sending a company my DNA. Maybe I have an over active imagination, but it just doesn't seem like a good idea.

I just fond out that the hospitals I have had surgeries at recently had me listed as an American Eskimo. No wonder I have always loved whale blubber. I wonder if I can claim any benefits?

I was always told I was Italian and Irish.

I went 'next door' to bring my parents some grub, asked them what I was made up of (old people love trying to figure this stuff out). smile

They said I would probably be:

40% French (Cajun)
30% German
10% Irish
10% Spanish
10% Native American (Indian)

Damn, I always wanted to be Russian!

Oh, hell, let's see.

Loads of Swabian, so that means stuff from below the Black Sea in the distant past.

Oh, and Dutch, since they tended to bring back a Dutch wife or two when working as mercenaries.

Plus Germans and Bavarians. And some French, though we don't talk about that too much.

And naturally the Black Forest part of the family, which is either a bit of French or a genetic branch that looks like a telephone pole. Marrying from two villages over was really venturing forth for them.*

* In fairness, genealogy matters in the Black Forest part of the family, and things are carefully drawn out to prevent inbreeding. The rule there is no closer than third cousin!

My wife is planning on doing this DNA test sometime soon*, as do I. Probably nothing too exciting on my side and much I probably already know about - mostly English and Scottish, plus probably a small bit of German and Native American.

*Although again, probably nothing too exciting. smile Her father is 100% Norwegian and her mother is Irish, so it makes for quite the combination sometimes. biggrin
