I was gone for a while myself, but recently came back. Like some others here, I stopped simming. It's getting too damn expensive.
It is? When I started simming you couldn't get a decent PC for under $1500, and the good ones cost $2000 or more. Games were $60 each, and because of the variety of titles I used to buy one almost every month. I had a CH stick, then I got TM's first stick, then I got the Pro, then I got the rudder pedals, then I got the FLCS and TQS, all in like 7 years. Doesn't count the wheels I bought for racing. I upgraded my video card annually, my CPU every 18 months or so. Bought a new HD every 6 months it seemed as capacities went up. I've bought one HD in the past 5 years, my SSD. I've gone through only 3 video cards and 2 CPUs. I bought my current HOTAS in 2009. My wheel in 2012. Haven't bought anything else hardware wise. I have ROF and all its planes, but they haven't released a new one in years. I bought CloD (ugh), BoS and BoM. I have DCS World with a few modules, none more recent than the MiG-21. I have bought as much simming stuff in the last 7 years as I bought in a single year in the 90s, and back then I was making $8/hr. If it's too expensive for you now, you're doing it wrong. I don't see how SimHQ could be decreasing in popularity given the quality of my posts

Its not "only" the simulations... or "hardcore"...
Its also that the subject matter itself... doesn't seem to appeal to the young generations.
A couple of years ago I was working with a LOT of young men in their 20's, a few were in late teens. We had hours to chat, every day... sometimes it'd be 15 hours together, at the worksite or on the bus to and from, and then dinner at restaurants.
Jets, planes, tanks... were mentioned fewer times than fingers on my hands. They just weren't interested. Pickup trucks, motorcycles, the best smartphone, cell reception (because we were often very remote jobsites), chix, auto mechanics, fast cars, vacation destinations, types of drinks, just how drunk they got last Tuesday... that appealed to them. But they didn't care what a Strike Eagle was, what it would do, or how it would do it. Nor did they care about the difference between an MBT and an IFV.
Sooo... that crowd, upon learning that simulations of it exist, would ask: "but why not play a GAME instead of having to study about a plane?"

I'm 54 and over the course of my entire life I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of guys I've known who had any real interest in planes, tanks, military history etc. outside of a "oh cool" in passing or attending an occasional air show. I'm personally acquainted with only one other person who actually flies combat flight sims. I've known a couple of others who've bought one or two and then not spent more than a couple of hours in it before shelving it. We are, and always have been, a rare breed.

Last time I met anyone who played anything like that (outside of sim forums) was...1993. I was working at a movie theater and the projectionist had Novalogic's Comanche. Hardly a realistic sim, even for that time, but he was so far the only one I ever met who played a flight sim-type game at all.

I know 2 that play flight sim/games. They are my brothers.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I haven't been here long and only got into DCS in 2012, so I obviously can't comment on how SimHQ has evolved. But for what it's worth, sites like this may be losing traffic in general. For whatever reason, various subreddits seem more popular than any given dedicated site. One of the more popular DCS specific subreddits, Hoggit rarely ever mentions any specific site except Eagle Dynamics' own, for obvious reasons, and Mudspike because official news occasionally gets posted there. Falcon BMS and the civilian flight sims also have their own subreddits. Guess young people just like Reddit :|

That's possible. I've never cared for the format of Reddit so I've never spent more than a few minutes there and generally it was just some AMA I wanted to see.

On a related note, I just saw this on IMDB today. "IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic. Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb's social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb's editors and one another. IMDb's Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account ( https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat ( https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest ( https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr ( http://imdb.tumblr.com/). Because IMDb's message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they'd like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision."

To re-use a term made popular by your previous President, the world is "evolving" at an accelerating rate. Soon its natural state will be seen as "constant change", followed by "whoa, get a load of all this change!", and finishing with "enough with the change already!"
Things that we thought would exist as is "forever", appear to be increasingly less certain with each passing year. 15 years from now, people might ask
"wait, there was military flight simulations... for RETAIL SALE?!? TO THE PUBLIC?!.. "

I can't tell you how many times I have told someone I was into flight (combat) simulators for the PC, only to have them give me a weird look. Especially right after 9/11. On job interviews I mention it when asked about hobbies. I have yet to meet anyone who says, "I am too". Just that strange look. I personally know two guys who sim at all. One of them has given it all up to play games on his phone, and the other only has time once in awhile to fly Falcon 4 (still) and doesn't have the PC power to play anything newer (after he got married and has a kid now). One more friend is close, but he plays Forza which isn't a sim. I don't even list it as a hobby anymore because there aren't many of us left that I personally know...and I've pretty much stopped simming too. My hobbies are restoring old tractors, Jeeping, and guitar.

There's a lot of negativity here recently, people get bored of it and drift away.
