Its a simple game.
You create a situation that would put a person/s in a moral dilemma
If your up for posting a response you must answer honestly.

Example
you work for a small but profitable company your paid well and have a decent standard of living.
You find out your employer has committed a violent criminal act.
if you do the right thing you will loose your job.
If you don't you will have to live with the knowledge he will probably get away with it.

My answer
Ten years ago with out question i would have reported him to the police.
Now sad thing is if were real i don't know what i would do.
At my age with my financial situation it would be a devastating to my family move.

The consequences of NOT reporting are far more serious. If you let it slide, and later becomes known that you KNEW about it, you would be in worse hot water than just looking for a new job.

Document EVERYTHING, report.

Good scenario though

The thing is its very easy to take the moral high ground when you are in a position of strength.
Or the ramifications of what may be a illegal or immoral act do not affect you directly.
I have a healthy respect for whistleblowers not all of them without getting political.
There was a police sergeant in my country recently who reported to the media some very unfair practices when it came to speeding tickets
And subsequent fines the guy got crucified for it he had to resign in the end.

Not been put in that position, closest is when I witnessed a crime while working.

A big retail estate somewhere near Birmingham, they had problems of theft from cars, ie. broken windows and radios etc. stolen from within the vehicle. The management of the estate wanted it protected and I was asked to come along and show how CCTV could be used.

I got one of my team to bring along the CCTV demo truck and parked it up in a likely position in the carpark, set up the cameras and waited for the client to show up, the salesmen from the local office arrived and just before the client was due a red car came speeding in to the carpark and not 50m from where I was sitting stopped beside a BMW, then a guy got out the passenger side of the red car with a hammer, broke the window of the BMW, he leaned in and in seconds extricated himself from the window with the BMW's radio etc. hanging from his other hand, he jumped in the red car's passenger seat and it sped off.

I got it on tape, I got the registration number of the red car, the salesmen seen it all happen, but none of them wanted anything to do with it, I reported it to the police, they got the tape and all the details I could give.

3months later I got a call from the police to say they had caught the guy and asked if I would come to an ID parade.

I had to take a day off work catch the train - I got 1st class travel from Newcastle to Birmingham went to the police station and the suspect was a no show.

Later the police told me that very few people actually will go to an ID parade or even act as a witness and that the suspect did not expect me to show up. Later he was arrested and confessed, it went to court and along with a few other things he had done, he got 3 months jail.

I was really quite shocked at my colleagues, we are supposed to be a security company and they did not step up and be counted.

Oh, we did get the job to secure the whole estate not just the carpark smile

Taking the moral high ground when you are not in a position of strength is what defines your character. When it's hardest, is when it's easiest to abandon your principles, imho.

Do I have proof? I mean solid I-will-send-you-to-jail-with-this proof?

If so, then there is a serious moral dilemma:

When I find out his net worth and how much he can liquidate at one time without gaining too much attention, do I:

A) Blackmail him for a lump sum, or

B) Demand recurring payments over time to remain quiet?

wink

Why do you feel there would/should be consequences, at all? I don't think the OP has any moral or legal obligation towards anyone.

How do you envision him getting into hot water for non-reporting?

Girlfriend ordered by doctor (I was present in doctors office for this) not to drive.

Girlfriend can't survive without driving.

I don't live with her yet. She seems to manage her "okay" and "not okay" times just fine - just as I would with drinking beer.

Do I "snitch"?

Or do I "do society a favor"?

I work in a service industry, I see people take advantage all the time. I know the difference between taking home a shift meal and taking home groceries, and I report it accordingly. I do turn my back on small infractions to be honest but open stealing I can't.

This is kinda one of those love her or leave her moments you might think, but don't get me wrong you need to protect her from herself at this point, yes? It's hard to give up ones independence and taking away driving privileges is a big dump on independence. So basically if she means something to you then you need to step up and be "The Guy" but that's just what I think and even if she isn't "The One" for you at least help her understand what is happening and why.

Hypothetical dilemma no 2

You're leaving a restaurant/Bar just about to get in your car when you hear shots fired
You take cover you see a guy jumping into a car with a gun in his hand you get a good look at his face.
The police arrive you give your statement.
A few days later the police ask you to attend a police lineup.
But at this stage you find out the guy with the gun
Is a senior member of a very brutal crime gang the guy he killed was also a criminal.
If you ID the guy you and your family will be at risk and probably have to go into protective custody.
Maybe even have to be relocated with a new name and credentials.
This means giving up your home job friends extended family.moving to a new area and starting all over again.

Well what would you do?

If he is brutal and ruthless, logically, he will/should kill you regardless whether or not you give evidence. You are a loose end. Killing you will make sure you never speak. Otherwise, he must always be wary of when/if you decide to identify him. If he is going down for one murder, he has almost nothing to lose with another.

Misdemeanor or felony?

I see little point in reporting misdemeanor activity, it might result in more trouble for me than if I ignore it. Hard to ignore felonious actions, though. Then as already mentioned failing to act might turn out worse for you than if you report it.

However, anyone can think up edge cases where you should go the other way. Whistle blowers can get retaliated against, yes. If you're lucky, you should be able to report it anonymously.

This is the very definition of a judgement call. You must rely on your own. If you don't trust it, that is serious and you should seek assistance because everyone really needs to be able to count on their own judgement.
