Been shopping again for pocket knives for my Dad and myself. I am starting to get a little collection going, nothing high end. It seems that almost every knife I look at now has a yellow label on it stating that this product can expose you to chemicals known to the State of California to cause Cancer. Not exactly the kind of gift one wants to give or receive. My google searches show that most people aren't taking the warning very seriously. Have any of you guys come across this, what are your thoughts?

Well, they put that warning in restaurants who serve alcohol and stuff, so I think it's pretty meaningless. I haven't seen anyone walk up to a restaurant, see the sign, and then turn around. This link provides some good insight: http://www.calrest.org/a-guide-to-californiarsquos-proposition-65.htmlAnd of particular interest, I think: Substances are added to the list regularly. When the federal Environmental Protection Agency lists a new substance as a possible cause of cancer in laboratory animals, that substance is added to the Proposition 65 list. The fact that there is no evidence of human carcinogenicity does not stop OEHHA from listing it. When the Legislature or the Department of Labor requires information for employees who use a substance in their jobs, that substance is added to the list.
The fact that it is dangerous only to people who are exposed to large amounts does not stop OEHHA from listing it. Although the listing decisions are reviewed by scientists appointed to Advisory Panels by the governor, the Proposition 65 rules do not allow the scientists to consider whether there is any real danger from the substance, when they are deciding whether to list it.

Every time I see that label I figure I'll be ok because I'm m not in California.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.” -Robert Heinlein

Good old boy who cried wolf scenario. When CA tells you there are wolves in everything from diapers to donuts to doggie bags, who will take it seriously anymore?

Nobody (I know) takes any of those warning serious in any way because it's very clear that practically all of it is just cover-your-ass crap courtesy of our wonderfully productive overpopulation of lawyers. And It's not just CA, even though we certainly go the extra mile. Have you lately looked at the warnings on a latter? It's a killing machine. Here's another nice one: Prevent baby suicide, don't leave bucket-deathtraps in plain view!

The sun can cause cancer. Crap. Better not walk outside. But sleeping too much on one side can cause cancer too. Oh no! Well, there goes sleep. But wait... not sleeping can cause cancer as well! Damn! I guess we're screwed. Better buy that pocketknife to be safe. At least then you can use it to make neat carvings out of wood for people to remember you by, someday after you're long gone.

So they warn you about a chemical that might be on the blade, but not how to safely handle the blade itself?

The sun can cause cancer. Crap. Better not walk outside. The fun thing with that is that practically all sunscreen contains oxybenzone - which can - you guessed it - cause skin cancer. Also, too little sun exposure makes you more likely to be vitamin D deficient. A vitamin D deficiency makes you more likely to develop all kinds of cancer.
