Check out that fancy new flat smoke trail wink

Waiting for the Su-33 and MIG-29 flight models. And I hope the next 3D object that gets updated is the MIG-29S. The A looks wonderful, but I almost never play it as the S is much better.

Nate, all I see in the Docs folder is that old quick-start guide. Am I missing something?

As well as the quickstart, I see a 47Mb Flight Manual - but only in the Beta (1.5x dev branch)...it's not there in the OpenAlpha folder structure if that's where you're looking!

I am very grateful Ice, after all, this is the one and only ever flight simulator made available in the history of humanity. Oh wait, what am I saying, this is also the only computer game to ever pioneer effects such as smoke trails, explosions and over-wing vapour. Since it can't be compared with anything else, how foolish of me to point out that they fix 1 thing and break another 3...

Joking aside.

The Mi-8 seems like a solid release now. the tyres still have a shiny look though.

M-2000, again a good update with fixes, stable progress, personally I'm really satisfied with Razbam.

The DCS changelog is quite short, mostly fixes. That's why I'm baffled by the fact they clumsily break the 3d model of the A-10C in one update, and don't run to fix it in the next... and they call the smoke trails "fixed", when in fact they never looked as totally broken. How the hell does something like this go unnoticed when they put it in as fixed?? Did anyone even test it for 1 second?

I think they meant to hot-fix the issue with smoketrails from some AAA missiles not rendering at all. So from mudmowers point of view it's better to see an ugly trail, than no trail (althoug allegedly manpads are still glitched).

The Hip manual is there in both 1.5.5 stable and OB, as these were updated together to the same version number on friday. And what a son-of-a-manual it is! Trying to figure out how the hell I'm going to bind these 430 pages I printed yesterday biggrin.

Changleog is half-arsed, as always, with God knows how many things not mentioned in it. Yesterday, for example, I discovered there were some major adjustments done to the MiG-21 FM in deep-stall-and-beyond situations. Wouldn't know anything about it if I didn't try, but at least some of my love for flying this the plane is back.

Thanks for the heads-up, haven't flown the 21 in a while due to the funny FM.. I'll give it a spin now wink

Just to clarify, I'm talking about two things, which bothered me the most: a) sudden and long-lasting zero-G condition beyond 30 degrees of AoA, which was causing almost inevitable engine flameout whenever I tried to practice spins - this is gone now, and b) ping-pong-ball-style departures during high speed, high G turns, now replaced by more natural rolling oscillations of varying amplitude. The rest of the FM is the same, but these two dreaded issues were driving me nuts, that's why I consider the newest changes "major".

Ok I gave the 21 a try. I can still cruise along all day at 45.5 AoA without loosing altitude at MIL or minimum afterburner. A little bit of rolling from side to side but that's all.
Looks like the roll rate is very slow again...

I'm gonna mothball it again.

Oh, that one. Haven't tried the "riding-on-the-45.5" in latest version I admit, but I'll take a liberty of not agreeing with "all day long" part, because in previous one, the plane after a few dozens of seconds in this attitude was eventually loosing speed and dropping like a rock, even at full afterburner. One might argue it should do it faster, though.

Well, then it's gotten MUCH worse now. Give it a try. You can hold it there with MIL thrust, if you go full A/B now, you'll even start to climb.

Same. the cargo view is great though, I can place the cargo exactly where I want.

After playing with this a bit... it looks like it does just about everything right, except the drag. Lift falls off as it should. Afterburner at that AoA should add lift, and it does. But at that angle, the delta should produce excessive drag that more than exceeds the thrust.

This flaw doesn't totally destroy the flight model, just needs to be tweaked a bit. In a dogfight against an AI F-4, being able to fly a stable 45 degree angle is no advantage, he will pull up and kill you. It is not even really that stable, plenty of wing rock. If the drag was higher, the speed would fall off as it should and the behavior would probably be fairly close to reality.
