Yes, and no. Theoretically, when the Caucasus terrain is updated it will look better than it does now. However, given the fact that you can't fly the same terrain in either version makes the basic question less easily answered.

I guess my question is more about specifications. I was reading somebody on another forum claiming this:

"1.5 uses the new gfx engine, but doesn't it still draw the Black Sea map the same inefficient way it did before? That's why they still have to do all the udpates to that map for v2.5.

Which probably won't be anytime soon since the DCS whims seem to be focused on their WW2 Normandy map (if anything)."

DCS v2 appears to perform better, but since it is a completely different map, it is hard to quantify.

V2.5 is coming, and probably will be quite good. The when part, however, is anyone's guess.

So DCS v2 uses the same graphics engine but performs better. So when we get v2.5 it will just perform better.

In theory the Nevada map is optimised for the new engine, while the old Caucasus is not, yet, which is creating the difference in performance. Whether v2.5 will be better remains to be seen.

I'm uncertain what, other than more airports for NTTR and a Black Sea map redone to NTTR standards, 2.5 will offer in the graphics arena, although I've seen talk of further lighting enhancements which will affect objects beyond what the terrain looks like.

There are really 3 aspects to visuals--the 3D model (many of which have been replaced already for planes and the terrain is still being adjusted), the textures (not sure what the state of this is on various planes and terrain, but they're not all to a uniform standard right now), and the lighting.

Textures can cover a lot of shortcomings in a 3D model, but the reverse isn't really true. A better 3D model with more polys can still look dated if it has low-res textures. Lighting is equal-opportunity--it helps (or hinders) the way everything looks and is a worthy focus given that DCS World up to 1.4 still basically had LOMAC-era lighting. Everything looked flat, 2D, washed out.

Better lighting is more power-intensive, and those with older/underpowered rigs are going to notice, but I think it's the right move. Likewise I think better textures are a must. While the works of 3rd parties like Tom are admirable, they're still only piecemeal for this or that plane. We need the entire world brought up to a common modern standard.

T1: DX8, Original Terrain engine (LoMAC/FC)
T2: DX9, Improved Mesh Resolution, Noise Layer Etc (FC2/BS1/DCS1.2.x)
T3: DX11, EDGE Support, Texture Resolution Increase on Caucasus (DCS 1.5.x)
T4: DX11, EDGE Support, ClipMaps Support (NTTR), Introduced Format, File Structure, Underlying System and DRM to Handle Multiple Terrains.
T5: DX11, EDGE Support, Dynamic Mesh Terrain Technology (DCS: Strait of Hormuz)
T6: ????

HDR, PBR, Lighting and Shading Etc arent really part of the Terrain Engine,
They are Evolution's of the Lighting and Effects in the EDGE Graphics Engine.

DCS 2.0 / NTTR Currently Uses T4 and Clip Maps (High resolution terrain meshes and textures up close, lower Resolution Farther Away from Camera).

DCS 1.5 / Caucasus Currently Uses T3, Terrain Mesh resolution is Static across the map, along with textures etc.

On Mid/Performance/Enthusiast Tier GPU's NTTR Should be better Performing.

on Low/Value Tier GPUs, well, NTTRs Texture and Mesh Resolutions Might be a issue, Specially on 2GB or Lower and Weak GPUs.

But Enough of my technical mumbo Jumbo..

Please tell me ED aren't entertaining DX12. I'd prefer to see DCS moving forwards instead of backwards in the next 25 years.

DX12 would be a move forward, as it would remove all CPU overhead from DirectX Commands vs DX9,10,11.

Developers havent even found the limit of DX12's Draw Commands Yet.

Would that mean if you're on Windows 7 you wouldn't be able to fly it anymore? Or would you still be able to use an older DirectX version via an in-game pulldown menu?

As Skate said, it would be a move forward ... but given that they've just upgraded their engine, really, I personally don't believe they'll be moving towards DX12 too soon.

Correct DX12 would require Windows 10, No need to force anyone to upgrade to Windows 10, in 5 years it wont be much of a problem as any new CPU from this point On will require Windows 10.

However, There were users that were upset w/ the Upgrade to DX11 as their Windows Vista/XP Machines or old lower spec Systems no longer worked.

I know DX12 is a progressive step forwards.......the problem is that ED's 'development' goes in the opposite direction.

Yes, they'll spend hundreds and thousands on cockpits and HOTAS and displays, but they will NEVER spend a few hundred to get a CPU and GPU released during the last administration! Nothing post-2010 is worth getting!!!!1111
