I've been burning up ammo in the Nieu 10 at close range and can't seem to even make an ole Aviatik smoke.
I've tried aiming above, below and where the braces cross.
Just wondering where the proper aim point is at close range ?

Another thing you might want to try is the tracer mod. Maybe a little unrealistic for the time of the N10 but it helps a good deal in learning about deflection shooting. You will be surprised how far "off target" you need to be aiming when your opponent is turning.

Wondering all the time why some people are using a tracer mod (which I made years ago for p3 I believe?), because there are tracers in the game. You can tick/untick tracers in the briefing room.

I aim were the braces cross. You have to make sure that your head is 'centered', with the braces making an 'x' in the windshield ... it is easy to be off line if you are leaning (i.e. with TrackIR).

It's been a while since I've flown it. They appear to hit just above the bracing cross if you are in level flight and really close! Here's a few vids:

I found it hard to see where the rounds were hitting even in 1080 resolution, but there were a few good spots in each where you can make it out...
