I got to be honest, when EA/Dice announced it I really didn't think WW1 was going to work in the Battlefield type of play or environment, but after getting a taste in the beta, then continuing in the last 4 days of playing every mode, and the first 3 Chapters of the SP campaign... I was wrong, it does work... and it's pretty damn awesome IMO... now understand, it's still Battlefield... but it works.

I purposely decided to not share screens or videos, so anyone who might want to play without spoilers, could... and this opinion post is also without spoilers.

First off... the Single Player Campaign is broken down to 6 chapters, about 4 acts each, the first being like a tutorial so you play that as soon as you boot it up, quick and easy one.

Now for the rest, you don't have to play in order... each Chapter tells ones soldiers story... and it's pretty good. It actually contains actual locations, battles, etc etc... you just play a character.

The first was a tank driver... some great visuals and actions... don't worry, you spend a pretty good amount of time out of the tank, stealth mode, stealing parts... tanks were very unreliable back then. wink

The second was the airman story, again pretty fun and the airship battles are pretty good.

The only thing wrong with the campaign, IMO, is sometimes I wasn't sure what I was suppose to be doing. If you missed a order in all that combat, your stuck wondering? Huh? oh, and of course the ridiculous amount of hits, damage, and fire... cool effect, constantly being shot but hell we would be dead in 5 minutes if it was realistic. wink

Multiplayer. I tried all 5 modes, the new one and my favorite is operations, it's a long one 2 hrs give or take... it's a big map with objectives to keep pushing or defending, then you win or lose and move on to the next area of the map... it's the closet thing to a full battle, and cut scenes and real war info is broadcast between each map section.

The other ones, conquest, rush, (which I didn't like in BF4, but love the one I played... woods and trenches.), team deathmatch (for weapon testing, building), and pigeon, I thought was going to be dumb, but was pretty awesome and fun... get to the pigeon, capture it, write a note, send it, if it makes it...artillery coming in. Other teams doing the same thing, kinda like VIP. and Domination, which is capture the flag with just infantry.

Maps are beautiful, awesome, and well done for combat.

Weapons, not a fan of unlocks, skins etc etc... but I play for the teamwork. Good selection... but ridiculously reliable, (in WW1 you had more of a chance of a weapon malfunction then firing it, lol.) and as usual, Snipers can ruin a good game, they come in handy when they are supporting a team, but when you see 4 or 5 out on the edges of the maps, getting kills... defeats the purpose, but a game problem not a BF problem.

I do not like the specialty units... too powerful, good for fun gameplay... I did notice a option in the server settings to turn them off, nice.

Tanks are awesome but too fast and reliable. Airplanes, well their airplanes... very maneuverable, more then should be, and easy targeting.. no lead.

So, IMO... and to my surprise I actually thing BF1 is pretty damn awesome, and probably the best in the series... fine tuned to perfection, very fun and different while still being a Battlefield game.

Highly recommended if you like the series...either for the SP or MP... both well done.

Damn,I was hoping not to have to buy this. BF3 was the last one in the series I put decent time into.I have BF4 and have just re-visited it but I'm still a lowly rank 14.

BF1 sounds more and more like something I would enjoy.

I like the idea of the campaign... I'd by it when it was is cheap as chips in a sale, just for the campaign... but the MP side isn't for me.

However... Why on earth they didn't put an immersive campaign into SW Battlefront I'll never know, another EA game ruined.

I've been playing the campaign for the last hour, and it is quite awesome.

The install allows you to play SP once 33% is loaded, which was a nice touch for something that takes 3 hours on 4MB/sec.

I have Win 10, i3 6320 and an HD6950 which doesn't meet the minimum spec. I get a warning, but it allows you to play, and even on the lowest settings, it looks and plays fantastic. Be careful if you don't have the hardware - I tried to up the gfx settings and it flicked to ultra, resulting in a hard lock because I guess it tried to set features I don't have on my card.

The acting, characters, and settings are brilliant. I know a lot of people don't rate the Battlefield series for its SP campaign, but this is one of the best I've played of several BF/COD/MOH games.

Ah bugger, wasn't really planning on getting this as every BF game has gone slightly further downhill in my opinion after BF2...however, I played the beta - thought it was a bit OK if a bit fast/twitchy, but you're making me have second thoughts now.

Do I give BF just one last try?

wait for a big sale in 6 months or so if all you want is the SP... if you want MP, then don't wait to long. imo

Just bought it....

I generally only play multiplayer. May give the single player a try on this one too as it sounds a little different to the norm.

Thanks for the great write up Magnum. I was on the fence about this too, but seeing your opinion and some other favorable reviews means this one will be on my Christmas list for sure.

The bullet 'sponges' are a downside as are unbalanced weapons (sniper rifles one hit non-headshot kills). That said multiplayer is fun at the moment but look forward to hardcore mode (coming soon the in game news says). Intriguing was the mention of custom games where you could limit some types of class/weapons and other unspecified things. These could be real interesting if half of each team isn't snipers or medics.

I'd like to see a "Human Wave" mode with lots of heavy weapons and insta-spawn for the attackers biggrin

I have played operations a few times now and never had one take more than 45ish minutes. I think the lack of teamwork in a lot of squads (attackers not reviving to save tickets, defenders not reviving to help defend points rather than wait for respond) has made them move a lot faster.

Two weeks now and still a great game! Playing on the Xbox is such a joy. Big screen. Flawless comms. "Hey Cortana, record that!" 20 years of flight sims has had me disparage FPS games as mindless twitch machines using only the pee-sized part of our brains that we share with crocodiles. It's a real mind-game trying to balance self-preservation and aggressive objective pushing.

Yes, still having fun here too. I really like using gas as an area denial weapon. The implementation seems much more effective than other games which use tear gas etc.

Trying for the medals, but getting five ppl headshotted with an LMG is quite a challenge!

Thanks for the review Magnum. Definitely tilted the purchase decision for me and am downloading as I type this. As much as you love online, I am glad you reported some on the SP campaign because that is what I like best.

I started thinking that would work as well but since everyone has gas masks I switched to incendiary grenades.

ya, but once you have a gas mask on, hip shooting only, can't aim down your sights... less hits from the enemy.

I just thought about this too. I read somewhere that you can stop gas grenades by melee-ing them, but I haven't had a chance to get on and see if that actually works.
