Oh boy, I had dinner at a very good Chinese food buffet restaurant last night ... first time in years. I still feel full as I write this post! piggy

While we were chowing down, my wife and I discussed food wed much rather be eating ... something more sophisticated with a little more character. I guess in our old age we've fallen out of love with our Chinese food binge eating habits of yore.

Does gourmet Chinese food actually exist?

It all seems so fast. Heck, a friend of mine (Sagen here at SimHQ) mentioned a German dish called Rouladen to me today and I wouldve enjoyed that way more than the hundreds of different Chinese (/Canadian) food items at the buffet! Anyone here ever try Rouladen? ...

Beautiful dish.

Whats up with Chinese food?

There is such thing as gourmet Chinese food and it holds its own with any cuisine anywhere, you just have to go to good restaurants and not the Chinese equivalent of Denny's.

Of course, depending on your region, you might not have much of a choice.

If we're talking an average quality restaurant though, I'd go Thai or Korean over Chinese, I find the ingredients often aren't too fresh in the cheaper Chinese places.

One of my favourite dishes!

Quite easy to do actually, and even better with home-made Sptzle.

Rouladen... Yes, pork or beef, it's good.
As for chinese food, give me hot pot!

Ive reckon that Chinese food is always adapted to the country its in.
Here in Spain, for example, anything that says "Spicy" on the menu.....isnt, The Spanish, in general, dont like spicy.
Nor do they like overly hot (temperature) food.
They DO, however, like sweet things. So the dishes tend to be a bit sweeter than you would expect.
Not nice when you are expecting something spicy and hot and you get something sweet and just warm.

Indian food here is the same. Sweet, and I mean REALLY sweet, main courses. SO sweet you would think its a feckin dessert.
My last visit to an Indian restaurant I had Chicken Tikka Masala. Playing safe, so I thought. I couldnt eat the damned thing it was so sweeet. Sent it back. Once I send something back I wont eat in that restaurant again that night.

A few tears ago I found a great little Indian restaurant, right in town, fantastic food, authentic, tasty, beautifully cooked and presented. It shut down within 6 months. No trade from the locals, apparently. Bummer, I used to go once a month.

If you want a cheap, reasonable, meal, here. Chinese offers a Menu del dia. Meal of the day.
starter..soup, salad, or spring roll.
Mains...Choice of mebbe 20 main courses, usual suspects. Tikka, curry, black bean sauce, prawns or chicken, , pork, or beef,
with..rice (either plain or tres delicias, a mix with dried prawns, and veg), noodles, french fries,
Dessert..ice cream, creme caramel, or coffee.
Included..half bottle of house wine.

COst? Between 5 Euros and 9 euros. eek

Good value but not gourmet.

Pretty much all of the Chinese food served in restaurants in the US, at least, is 'gourmet' or at the very least, party food. 95% of what is on the menus is nothing like what is eaten by the average Chinese citizen on a daily basis.

Their more upscale cuisine has changed a lot in the last 20 years, with a lot more in the way of fusion and new ingredients and methods of preparation.

It's to the point where what Chinese people would have been considered a good restaurant a decade or two ago would now be considered old fashioned and boring.

My culinary nightmares can be summed up in two words: China Buffet.

I like Chinese buffets.

Dim Sum, at a good establishment, is a whole different thing from the average Chinese restaurant fare.

Good points. Note to self ... get to an authentic dim sum restaurant! (It's probably been 25 years since I've been last ... shumai, har gow, etc. and a pot of green tea ... nice)

Our favorite Chinese Restaurant is Imperial Chinese Garden (not a buffet) in Atlanta (Rockbridge Rd, Stone Mountain). We never miss on an opportunity to eat there and see the owner, Mr. Choo, whom we've known since 1989.

Chinese (or fried seafood) buffets? No can do. It would be like giving a reformed alcoholic a bottle of Crown. Best for me to just stay away. Besides, I could never get my monies worth like I use to.

True story.

Was in China Town in NY in some funky Chinese restaurant where we were the ONLY ones there that didn't look Oriental. We ordered everything off the menu, including a duck that when it arrive looked like a cross between dehydrated cardboard and a sun dried raisin.

Nek minute the table next to us had their order turn up and you could hear the angels singing as their duck was delivered to their table in all of its pristine gloriousness! Somewhat perturbed by what I was seeing (and feeling discriminated against being the only non-Orientals in the room) I called the waiter over and asked him how come their duck looked like that while ours looked like something that could suck water out of the atmosphere?

In broken english with a heavy Chinese accent the waiter said "Ah so, that is because that duck is a different species. That is chicken".

Ill get my coat exitstageleft

Regards

dunno the whole deal there but if it's quite local I'd expect the dishes to vary a lot with quality, especially the meat stuff. best idea is go with what everybody else eats to begin with.

But if it's quite a posh ($$) place it'd be much safer.

keep in mind that Chinese gini index (income inequality) is even higher than the US, while GDP per capita is 'bout Japan in the 70s and S.Korea in the 80s. So there's entirely different places/foods for different kinds of ppl, while the service on average is... meh. Personally I think the best chinese is home cooked.

This is more of a rhetorical question but can it even really be called "Chinese food" if you did not actually order it and eat it in China? I think this is like "Italian food" in the US where for the most part it is completely different from the food you would actually encounter in Italy.

indeed gravitating towards local flavor is a must far as businesses go, even say southern Chinese cuisine up north, the flavor changes inevitably. but it is still connected one way or other, an old colleague went to the States with her parents and they're now running a chain diner, but started with just two of them. she used to bring home made snacks, was wery wery good.

not so sure about buffets, many chinese dish needs stir-frying with quick fire heat. once you make them in big bulks there won't be enough heat there in time. For soup and pots the good ones gotta be slow boiled over night. There's an old saying "big pan food" is just crappy food to stuff face with, and "small pan dishes" are the good ones.

Anyway, just starting to cook myself, they (well good attempts..) beats anything from diners, even the fancy ones. It's just so time consuming though.

Bingo. This is the number one reason why significantly less people now cook compared to the past. At least in first world countries.
