Sim comes out, immediately there is a "mod" that has arcane instructions to make it work, but you MUST have it.

Latest, for me, is Orbx. Just sick of it. Tired of spending umpteems of time to just have a little fun. Too old, I guess.

Might be time to move onto combat flight sims then. Less tweaking of graphical components and more of improving your dogfighting or mud-moving skills. wink

Nothing beats the golden age of flight aims when you had to spend hours fannying around with autoexec.bat and config.sys trying to free up enough xms (or was it ems?) memory before you could even play the bloody things.

Play other things then. I've been flinging obscenities at Titanfall 2 lately. Pigeonholing yourself to a single genre is no fun wink

I agree. MEMMAKER made it too easy and Quarterdeck's QEMM even more so. I preferred managing those files manually, made me feel like I was in control of my PC (and with DOS I really was).

QEMM386 was hard to beat, though.

My current addiction is Battlefield 1 on Xbox. Nothing to mod, tweak, or install. Just fire it up and be amazed. I'm certainly not done with sims. I just no longer love them enough to justify the cash and time.

Sims ,,Wargames,,I ignore the Mods Find an acceptable playing level and play..I agree with Brun back in the DOS days when a game fit on a 3.5 inch floppy ,,Now games run into GB's and flashy graphics but really no soul..Most of the stuff I fly is older than 10 years

go photoreal - I spend a lot of time flying over photoreal terrain, get a good ATC track to listen and you can add to that some nice music and you are good to go.

There is no sim I've ever played that I couldn't enjoy mod-free. Even Strike Fighters worked fine with no mods, if a bit sparse. The majority of mods were simple drop-ins for extra planes and stuff, so I indulged.

CloD, which everyone said was worth it if you installed the mod? Sorry, no. CloD was broken, miserable. Maybe YOU can enjoy it if you spend a few hours messing with mods, but the very act of doing that ensures I will go in with a super negative preconception that no mod can overcome.

If I can go into Steam and click "download modded CloD" and that's all I need to do, THEN I will bother. Otherwise, I don't give a crap about the sim so why would I waste more hours of my life in an attempt to make it worthwhile? I already wrote off that investment, I don't feel I NEED to make it work.

I will never buy a game that has the consensus of "worth it if you get the mods, but sucks stock." Not going to bother.

Just the opposite for me - love to mod games. I think modding extends the game and makes is last much longer than stock.

That is often indeed the case but I think Jedi's point is that a sim should be complete and enjoyable to play at release. Mods should not be a crutch to depend on in case the standard game is crap.

The gaming communities are divided is what I've been finding. You got the

1) modding liberal types
2) no-mods conservative types

An attempt to roughly categorize the ones on Shq (top to bottom that's still alive):
BoB: Left
CAP2: right
Civil sims: left
DCS: right
EECH/AH: left
EAW: left
Falcon4: left
Gaijin: right
CloD: left
IL2: left
BoS: right
JF18: left
WOFF: right
Rof: right
SAM sim: left
Thirdwire: left

land combat sims: far right! maybe except Arma. ?not sure?

meself is somewhat moderate left. I like the game stable but also like to be able to mod it - hate the constant CTDs and bugs by third party freeware modding, while also hate the 20 page toxic debates asking for some game setting change.

It'll be great if there's a "community ideology meter" to display before buying into a game so there's a way to know what you're getting into.

biggrin biggrin

I have zero problem with mods that add extra features and content and add to the immersion of the game.

What I have a problem with are sims with missing features and content that should have had it on release and instead rely on the modding community to pick up the slack.

First I enjoy and learn a sim..When I'm good at it then I look for mods to give longevity to the sim..Loved strike fighters 2 and setup the Korea mod..one step at a time

Ideology meter test.

Flight models: should they have the ability to be modded?

1) yes. love tweaking it or make new ones or try some ones made by others.
2) no. it creates confusion to usability, is cheating in gameplay, and is a breach of IP rights. it should be handled by the developer.

3) What you do on your own machine is your business, as long as it does not negatively affect others (against their wishes), for example, tweaked flight models on a competitive online server. So tweak it for your own purposes, but use vanilla for online playing.

I guess that makes me a "sim libertarian". smile

Modding and tweaking become a game in it's self I'm sure a lot of folks just try modding to see if it works and don't really explore the mod it's self

I'm also firmly in this camp.

However the right wing simmers have told me that it creates cheating nonetheless, and the right wing developer sayz it's their IP and their content to create.
Oh well!

The lessen I learnt: ask this FM question (or if it's tanks, ask the armor thickness question:D) before buying!
