I read somewhere that before 2009 the players didn't even appear during the anthem. It wasn't until the DoD (or some military PR branch of something) paid some millions to make it happen, making the game seem more "patriotic".
This true? If it is it seems (to me) to be a manipulative move to encourage not just patriotism (which in itself some might see as good) but also its by-product, the suspicion and hatred of people who fail to show sufficient patriotism.
