What are some albums from some of your favorite artists that you really tried to like but just couldn't even after giving the album several tries?

There are a few for me,

1. "Obscured by Clouds" and all of the Syd Barrett era albums - Pink Floyd

2. "Uno", "Dos" and "Tres" - Green Day

Newest Maiden... don't even know the name anymore, deleted from my playlist... was hoping for some ol school metal, didn't happen with them, on this one.

Book of Souls, I have it but haven't really listened to it. Same goes for their previous album, The Final Frontier. A Matter of Life and Death was the last one that interested me enough from the get-go to really listen to it.

I have a few of those. Albums I bought based on my love of the artist before I really knew what was on the album, then found I liked a song or two at best.

Bush - Golden State
Collective Soul - I forget now, I think it had Why Pt 2 on it and it was the last of theirs I bought
Evanescence - their second album, can't remember the name
Billy Joel - his instrumental piano album, released long after River of Dreams
VH3 most definitely, bought it on the strength of the first single and found the rest wasn't close

The Wall?!?!? I understand The Final Cut is like...even MORE Wall than the Wall, sort of all the heavy stuff without the fun stuff...but The Wall?!?!

To each their own of course but Sapper's post surprised me nonetheless!

Building the Perfect Beast Don Henley. Loved 'The Boys of Summer', bought the album hated it. Strange.

Metallica - And Justice For All. First I thought it was just the bad quality of my tape recorder, but then I got the cd and realized it really sounded that awful.

Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door. Carouselambra ruined that for me.

Several comments I don't get, but we all have different tastes.

I'd say Rush's "Vapor Trails"

1. No soloing.
2. Poor production (bring back Terry Brown).

I wanted to like it. I understand why it's different. I read Neil Peart's "Ghost Rider" which explains allot. The comeback Vapor Trails tour was one of their best. Maybe I just wanted it to be allot better.

In concert, the added guitar solo in "Earthshine" (for example) really makes a difference, IMO.

I still listen to it sometimes, although I haven't upgraded to the remastered version yet. It has its' moments, I guess.

Judas Priest's Nostradamus.

These guys were pioneers in the new wave of British heavy metal, yet most of the album is slow, dark and plodding. It's a double album that could have just as easily been a single with some decent tracks. I really wanted to like it because the title song (which was released for free in advance of the album) is amazing, and because I had tickets to see them for that tour.

@MarkG, I actually like Vapor Trails. I agree that Terry Brown could have made the album better, but I like the album overall. Re the solos, I always felt that Rush is a "sum of their parts" band so this doesn't bug me that much.

Honestly, the one Rush album that was a complete miss for me was Snakes and Arrows. I absolutely love Far Cry, and Terry Brown would have torn it up with that album given its stylistic turn back to the band's 70s roots. I just felt that most of it was just blah, whereas most Rush stuff grows on me the more I listen to it.

I DISlike T4E, there are maybe 2 songs I like on it. VT has some decent songs on it, so does S&A, and I can't say I dislike those albums but I consider them pretty weak. I haven't listened to CA enough to have an opinion on it, if I guess that, along with everything after Counterparts (excellent!), it's just so different from everything they've done from the mid-70s to the mid-90s that I just don't really WANT to put that much effort into it.

I agree that Counterparts was the last truly great Rush album. CA has some great songs, but nothing sticks out like Double Agent or Cool Fire. I used t listen to Counterparts all the time.

Double Agent and Cut To The Chase are my 2 favorites. Alex's solo on "Chase" was just incredible.
