I thought the pilot episode tonight was really outstanding. I can tell that Ed Harris' character is going to be a mighty interesting one. smile

So yeah this show is essentially Blade Runner + BSG + Deadwood but I really like it so far.

Emmm... What about the original "Westworld". Does it follow it's story line?

Only superficially. The basic premise is similar but most everything else is different from the Yul Brenner film. Think of the difference between the original "The Thing" and the remake by John Carpenter.

Well, once the series is underway it could prove to be more similar to the film than first pass indicates.

So how many "old timey" covers of 20th century songs did you notice?

I heard both Paint it Black and Black Hole Sun.

Those were the same two I noticed as well. I also noticed that the guy who does the music for WW also does the music for GOT. Ramin whatever his last name is.

Djwadi. He also does The Strain. Did Blade 2, back in the day, so Del Toro likes him.

However, the score was not as memorable as GoT's aside from those covers.

How about the cast? I think the producers hit a home run with the actors they chose. Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris were especially good.

The cast is good. The production looks top notch.

My concern is on the character focus. Crichton's novel was told from the point of view of the visitors of the park, who wanted to be the white hat cowboys (good guys) and how the machine's defects eventually turn them into actual killers. That gave the reader, or viewer, the anchor to identify with the story.

Now they want to turn it around in this new take. This seem to be (so far) a story of how bad we humans are and the development of sentience and feelings on the androids (defects?). Although the audience can be sympathetic of the AI against such terrible examples of humanity to play against to, I find it difficult to identify with them.

Kind of what happened with the characters in Spielberg's take on Kubrick's A.I. - and to a point with Caprica too.

But this is just the start, and I am hoping it has more twists along the way.

I'll keep watching. They have my attention.

Good post Bib. It's exactly that turning around of the perspective from the original film that immediately made me draw comparisons to BSG and Blade Runner.

This is certainly reassuring to see. Hopefully the ratings will continue to be very good.

TBH the show will need to step up its game to sustain let alone gain audience.

The preview of what comes later seems to indicate they will, and hopefully that will give it a boost.

True but it's still good to see that the initial audience interest in the show was there for the pilot. As long as the viewers don't drop for the second episode everything should be ok.

In other words, the audience has grown 10x since the pilot.

Almost unheard of.

What's not to like about GoT?

Sex, violence, sarcastic dwarves, bewbs, swords, Sean Bean getting killed, violence, bewbs, magic, dragons, bewbs, sex, and violence.

Everything I want in an HBO series.

It is the show that when it gets a bit "talkie" responds to my shouting at the TV to "show me the boobies" with an enthusiastic "okay!"

smile

The first show with scenes to deserve the tag "sexposition." Important plot points and character development in hot action.
At least the actors couldn't complain the scenes weren't part of the story, unlike many films where there's little to no dialogue when the sex scene starts.

I think it's unprecedented. I've never heard of any show that grew its audience tenfold from the first season through the next several seasons. Most shows tend to peak in the middle of their lifespan and then decline.

What other show goes on a tangent of describing male genital wart issues... with a detailed visual aid?

It has become more like a social experience. In my area there are two or three bars where you can go watch the show on big screens with some small cost or drink specials added to the offer. The places get packed to the brim on those nights.

And we are not talking only college kids in there.

HBO is betting on Westworld to be their next GoT, that is a lot to live up to.
