Hi guys,

for years I have used the paid version of Panda AV.
So far I am happy with it, but now the end of my subscription is approaching - and there are some good free AVs (including Panda free version).
The last research I did today came out with Avira free AV being advertised as one of the best free AVs

Your opinions pls.

I use Vipre on all the extended family machines I'm responsible for. Again it's paid for but it's not let me down.

I've used AVG Free for years on several systems that I've built for myself and about 20 others. I have it running on my parental units computers as my dad was an IT Tech as well and they run 24/7 like mine. Since AVG Free came out neither of us have had a virus get onto our systems. Like anything though good cleaners are still needed besides a antivirus. CCleaner, Super Anti-Spyware I use and some use Malwarebytes as well which I don't. My only complaint about AVG is this year's install has too many exe's for my liking running.

I used to use Avira but way too many false positives that wasted my time to see if it was a legit virus or not, none were ever legit. I still use their boot rescue cd though if I want to do a boot time scan or if I ever do get a real virus. Currently I use Avast free and like it for the most part, they now give you their version of Chrome web browser that has a button you press to put it into banking mode that isolates it from any potential key loggers, etc. and do use that for my online banking and store purchases.

If I didn't use Avast I think I would check out the free version of Bitdefender because that gets about the bests scores out of all of them.

Is the built-in Windows Defender not good enough anymore? I'm using that now due to Win10, but always stuck with MSE with Win7.

I think that Defender is quite adequate Ice if you are sensible with your browsing.I back it up with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free and run ADW Cleaner once a week.Never been caught out yet.

I certainly will never pay for A/V again,or use any of the free ones either.Let's be honest, most A/V software now is just full of 'bloat'. Defender is simple and unobtrusive.

I used to... until I realized that Malwarebytes is both anti-malware and anti-virus and on a few occasions, it clashed with MSE. So I'm just using Defender now with Spybot.

I haven't used anything but Windows Defender on my current PC. I've had zero problems, which I can't say when I used a wide array of anti virus software on prior PCs.

Both my sister and a friend of mine used AVG Free and they were frequently calling me to say something had gone wrong with AVG.I'm not sure what they did (if anything) to get in that situation so I put them both on Win 10 and Defender and they no longer have any problems. My sister had the same issue with Avira Free. Of course it could be her but I failed to see how she could have caused the problems she was having.

I've had problems with AVG ever since they sorta ditched their free model and started promoting the paid version. I used to use AVG years and years ago, back when I was still in the Philippines... maybe 10-12 years ago now when I last used it.

Avast user on 8 computers. Just have to be careful when letting it update it always
tries to trick you into updating to the pay version. And then you have to also uncheck
a bunch garbage that will pop up on you. Other wise, its been a good Antivirus. Just
a few false positives. Easy work a rounds. Been using it for so long, don`t remember
when we started with it.

Norton Antivirus. Works like a charm. Only had one incident, but it was my son's fault. Ignored a warning from a Minecraft mod.

I've been using nothing but Windows Defender for like 8 years now and haven't had any issues, even with XP all the way till 2014.

Of course now I'm running Windows 8.1 so I might have a bit of "immunity" via the low market share of that OS, and I can't speak for Windows 10.

Windows Defender (Win10) for everyday use and once a week, I do a scan using the freeware version of
Malwarebytes.

I tried the latest Avira and just like always it gave me a false positive within five minutes of use. I then tried Zonealarm free because it now comes with free AV too and uses the Kaspersky engine. The AV was fine but the firewall is hosed, IMO. Caused major browsing slowdown and their driver even caused a BSOD. Used to use Avast and Panda before that but dumped them too because they all hijack your PC and push ads to buy on you.

Only one I would consider now is bitdefender free but instead just went back to Windows Defender because it is the least intrusive and even it now gets false positives so has been beefed up. I use Windows firewall too but use Sphinx Windows Firewall free to handle rules instead of the clunky Windows GUI.

This is the best and least obtrusive option for me. But I have a boatload of other 3rd party software that doesn't run resident and also made an Avira resuce disk which allows you to do a boot time scan and even has updates in a Linux environment. But like I said, I have all kinds of root kit scanners and software for specific malware/viruses if ever needed.

I also use Virus Total online to upload any suspect files, always turns out to be a false positive too.

https://www.virustotal.com/en/

Then there is this too.

https://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

Here is a small list of just some of the 3rd party tools I have. All free.

Malwarebytes
Spybot Search and Destroy
FoolishIT CryptoPrevent
Sophos Anti Rootkit
Vipre Rescue Scanner
Ads Spy
Adware Cleaner
Avast aswmbr (anti-rootkit)
Bitdefender BootkitRemoval
ClamWinPortable
Junkware Removal Tool
HijackThis....and so on

Ooops, see I already posted in this thread a while back but this is an updated and more extensive response anyway.
