Have your ever waited and waited for a new release only to be disappointed by it.
It only happened to me once with microprose gunship.
I was like a kid waiting for it to be released did not bother to read reviews only previews read that it was going to be capable of Running Tank platoon 3 it would have been a first I think at that time.
Bought it the first day it was released but unfortunately microprose sold the company to Hasbro who dumped all over the game did not support it. full of bugs and then cancelled TP3. I was really pissed about that.
The thing is some fans did improve gunship one guy in particular did a lot and It showed what gunship and TP3 could have been
I think with out access to the code though it was doomed.

No, because I never "waited" for a release. The only times were I knew about a game before it was out, and my only two and last ever pre-release purchases, were Planetary Annihilation and Kerbal Space Program. And both disappointed.

PA promised a lot. THE best and most epic RTS ever in the history of gaming and this and that, and turned out to be a bland and boring game with 0 replay-ability and nothing to write home about.

And then Kerbal Space Program keeps getting worse and worse with each release, bugs and broken promises here. But this one I suppose is still in the "could get better" category as it's still being developed.

Since then I don't buy a game that's not out for a good time and I can see reviews and stuff. Or I just grab something that's 20 years old off GOG. biggrin

Granted, I'm not much of a gamer neither, so... what's coming next year? No idea and even less interest.

When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

Galactic Civilizations III

I thought I would like this a lot because it's by the same people who made "Sins of a Solar Empire" which I've put a couple hundred hours into.

GC III I just find to be rather bland and dull and I think it's mostly due to the fact that the ship combat feels very remote and underwhelming.

Operation Flashpoint on the original Xbox. Horrible. Took it back the next day.
AA came out about a week later and made up for it.

Bioshock 2

The new SW Battlefront

X Rebirth

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission

Tomb Raider (2013)

Plenty more, but those off the top of my head. I try not to pay attention to E3 now, devlopers put out the word about their projects ridiculously early. Let me now when you're dropping the game in a month.

Quite a few games over the years...
One of the biggest disappointments probably was 1944: Across the Rhine. What should've been M1 Tank Platoon set in WW2 became a horrid mess of windows within windows with frustrating GUI and horrible gameplay. Then Gothic 3, one of the buggiest games ever released. Hellgate London. it sounded too good to be true. The final game was... bad. Star Wars: The Old Republic. Nice single player RPG. Mediocre MMORPG. Warhammer Online. Great start! But the higher you leveled your character the less content was there to enjoy. Age of Conan. Awesome beginning followed by mediocre and boring content. IL2: Pacific Fighters. Because a pacific air war sim really needs a Hawaii map. Instead of torpedo bombers. And the gold medal goes to Cliffs of Dover. I can't stress just how bad the game was on release.

Dragon Age 2. I adored DA1 and even played it through several times in a row, but DA2 seemed like they had thrown away all the good on purpose. Now whenever I feel the temptation to preorder a game, I remind myself of DA2.

Ditto on Pacific Fighters, that pretty much killed my interest in IL2. On the bright side, I had pretty low expectations of ClOD to begin with, so it didn't affect me smile

Silent Hunter 5
I can't really remember if I had especially high hopes for it, but it still felt like being spat in the face when it was released. Still, I'm happy I kept it, thanks to the modding community for not only saving this title, but making it actually enjoyable.

Doom 3.

There is dark atmosphere in shooters, and then there is stumbling around in the dark with nothing but jump scares.

Deus Ex: Invisible War--played it once, tried a second time ten years later and I couldn't overlook its flaws a second time

Cliffs of Dover--no explanation necessary, and no, I'm not possessing the time or energy to install a bunch of mods right now

Battle of Stalingrad - still hope it will get better, though

DCS -- ditto, potential still unrealized

GC3 (same reasons as Panzer outlined more or less)

Falcon 4: AF--pretty much just F4 with some bug fixes and a new map, felt old hat and never grabbed me

Hind - I loved Apache, but this sequel was too different

Multiple Star Wars and Star Trek games, always driving me back to replay the old good ones smile

Did you ever just buy a budget title for the hell of it.
I did and it turned out to be one if not the most enjoyable game I have ever owned.
it cost all of a fiver back in 96.
And was called Tank platoon for the Amiga started a 20 year obsession with armour.

Oddly enough for me, there were two. First was Xwing vs Tie Fighter.

I played the bajeebus out of Xwing, and Tie Fighter, and was SO jazzed for the XvT Online PvP version that I built a new PC in anticipation of it.

It turned out to be fun for about 15 minutes, but the constant crashes, disconnects, and simply miserable network play ruined it completely for me almost immediately. I was so disappointed, I never even glanced at another Star Wars game for years (until I picked up a discounted copy of KoTOR, well after its run), though I got plenty of fun and mileage out of that PC I built. biggrin

Number two was MechWarrior Online.

I played a LOT of Mech 3, Mech 4, Mercs (with the Black Knight add-ons) and was really looking forward to a new & improved offering, post Microsoft, with some pvp, some campaign and co-op play, and basically adding MP flavor, graphics and action to a great family of games...

Another case where I upgraded my machine ahead of time (it wouldn't run on XP), only to find the damn game didn't even support a Joystick initially. WTH???? All it was (at that time) was a buggy, online arena, PoS gankfest... I uninstalled it within a day, and never looked back... I'd like to think it's improved since then, but I can't be bothered to re-install to find out... They lost me Day 1, and I'm not going back.

If I want a MechWarrior fix these days, I just fire up Mech 4-Mercs again. Great Game! Duncan Fisher FTW! biggrin

Cheers,
4 <S!>

-Master of Orion 3, a study of how to kill off a franchise with executive meddling and poor game design.

-Total War medieval 2, felt something was missing that made the first game great.

-Privateer 2, nice to see Owens, Warner, Waltz and Hurt pull off their acting chops but the game was terrible.

Back to Baghdad. Even once they DID print a real manual, it just seemed to highlight everything that was bad in the game. Too bad, because it could have been really great. Instead, we got incredible graphics with the gameplay of something from before Falcon 3.0.

To some extent, Skyrim and Fallout 4, I still enjoyed them quite a bit and all, but they were too console compromised and feeling as if a lot of corners were cut, to ever be great IMO.

Same goes for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.
