New airship design the biggest in the world on its maiden flight in the UK.
I have always liked to concept of airships a cheap and environmentally friendly way to travel/move Cargo.
It has been nicknamed the flying bum.

I think "Arse Air" would've been a good name.

Isn't a sky full of zeppelins and blimps a sign of an upcoming totalitarian government? Mandatory happy pills for all citizens, everyone wears gray jumpsuits, no smiling EVER...

I don't know about cargo, but no way in hell I travel at 90 mph unless they make a Titanic kind of thing, at which point I can't afford it so no way neither. biggrin

The main problem is that - thanks to party balloons - we are running out of helium

Helium was also the reason the military dropped the contract. The gas was leaking into the cabin, and no member of the military likes to sound like Mickey Mouse over the radio. Not many people know this.

I think the flying arse has a neater ring to it.

i really hope this project succeeds

this is a technology that could have completely changed the world for the better but was scrapped due to one accident and overreliance on fuel hungry engines and cheap labor

we could be moving cargo across oceans much faster than ships can do it, using solar power and gases produced incidentally in the production of other products or services.

really really hope this goes well. airships are fantastic.

Where would they store the cargo, hanging down on lines? I take it would have to be external, assuming the whole of the inside is for the gas,

Good idea for crossing large bodies of water though.

The US Navy operated two airships, USS Macon and USS Akron. Both were lost. Akron was destroyed in a thunderstorm in 1933, and Macon crashed during a storm in 1935 due to delayed maintenance (a wind shear caused structural damage to the unstrengthend tailfin).

Too bad because the idea was not that bad. A couple of those airships cruising west of Hawaii could have provided early warning of the Japanese fleet approaching Pearl Harbor.

In WW2 American airships, or rather blimps, patrolled the American east coast hunting for U-boats.

Jayhawk, American radar provided early warning of the Japanese approach to PH. Higher ups said it was the expected B-17s.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

So it seems that it had a serious case of aerial hemorrhoids. biggrin
