Watched aliens (the space marines one) last night and noted just how good it still looks 30 years or so later. The effects were still pretty good. I think it was the re-mastered version. But It got me thinking how many movies I enjoyed made back in the 80/90s have stood the test of time. Terminator one, still one of my all time favourites but the effects did not age well. Blade runner still looks good today I remember been blown away with the effects back when it was first released. What about you guys have your favourite movie/movies aged well.

What impresses me a lot about that film is that you can't tell at all that it was filmed in 1985. There's none of the typical 80's fashion and hair that gives it away. Same with the original Star Wars (A New Hope), hairstyles & fashions are designed out. Compare it with Battlestar Galactica (original film/series). It goes to show, you can't put too much money into design

Luke's hair and those big fluffy sideburns on a couple of the Imperial officers. But yeah, the original BSG just screamed disco 70's.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is still a favorite of mine, I can't think of a single part of it that needs to be updated. Same goes for movies like Ben-Hur, Spartacus, The Bridge on the River Kwai, etc.

A good example of this was last independence day I did enjoy the movie, I have learned sometimes you just have to shut the logical side of your brain off, and just enjoy a movie for what it is. But the acting story line and writing were terrible. but a lot od #%&*$# got blown up so. LoL The fundamental problem with the latest "Independence Day" is that it came out WAY too late after the original. Between 1996 and 2016 there had been a lot of other scifi action/alien invasion films made that used the same formula as the first "Independence Day". Audiences are just bored of that formula. It's a case of "been there, done that, got the t-shirt".

I don't know why I'm actually looking forward to the new Ben-Hur though.

If they redo TBotRK maybe they will make it more factual.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

The trailer for it looks damn good and I'll be seeing it just simply because the film takes place during the Roman antiquity period. Not too many of those coming out of Hollywood anymore.

If they redo TBotRK maybe they will make it more factual. The film did come out in 1957 so there was only so much violence and gore it could depict.

Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago were also largely fictional as well. It seems that David Lean took a lot of liberties with facts.

The trailer for it looks damn good and I'll be seeing it just simply because the film takes place during the Roman antiquity period. Not too many of those coming out of Hollywood anymore. You might like Risen PanzerMeyer. I enjoyed it very much. Production value was great and so was Joseph Fiennes. The whole movie looked and felt like a "how a Roman era investigation and detective process might have looked like". I personally feel that whoever was in charge for the sound effects and also showcasing Roman era unit tactics was amazing. The first scene has some outstanding representations of what a skirmish between the Roman occupiers and locals probably would have looked like. Vicious. I also, speaking as a Christian, feel that you wouldn't have to worry about the movie "preaching" at you. Its not that way at all. We are just watching someone else's experience during that time and through the Roman officer's eyes. Some of my favorites that I think stand the test of time: The Mission The Right Stuff A face in the Crowd Ben Hur

My favourite movie of all time, Master and Commander, will probably be regarded as timeless once some years have passed.
Heat is also a good candidate. A great story, with great characters.
The LOTR movies are timeless already.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Historical films tend to age well because they're telling a story set in a given time. Other genres, like comedies, SF, fantasy, etc can rely too much on the time in which they were filmed. Fashion, dialogue, and world view can be very different.
For example, watching Back to the Future today the 50s stuff works great, but the 80s stuff not so much. Kids today have likely never seen a DeLorean aside from the film. "All the best stuff is made in Japan" Marty tells Doc. Not in the 21st century it's not, good luck finding any significant number of things made in Japan after 2005. Korea? China? Malaysia? Even Taiwan? Sure, not Japan though. The absurdity of an actor being president. The idea that Libyan terrorists would just give bomb materials to an American crack pot and assume they'd get a nuke back.
A great film, and it does largely hold up, but it has some glaring gaps as the decades have proceeded.
