LOL You could probably feed a small village for a few days with that halibut.

Wow! I had no idea either. Wonder if it's still good to eat at that size? Some fish are, some aren't.
Might as well eat it now, it's dead. LOL

Definitely. It would be a massive waste of food not to eat it. A halibut that big could probably stock a Red Lobster restaurant for a couple of weeks!

That's my pet, Eric. I picked him out of thousands. I didn't like the others, they were all too flat.
I have a license for him.

Halibut can be ENORMOUS.

I once caught one when I was a child fishing in the ocean in a very remote area on the west coast of BC. I was in a small rowboat with my friend. We were using 200lb test line, very thick stuff, and we were hard-lining it (No rod, just holding the spool of line)

We had caught some salmon earlier in the day with the same lure and line, but this time the line went VERY taut and started dragging the boat around like it was a motorboat. We pulled the thing in together and got it right up to the edge of the boat, but we didn't have a net big enough to net it. When we tried to pull it into the boat the line snapped - not sure if it was because the halibut was overweight or if the line caught the edge of the boat and cut. Sure was the biggest fish I have ever caught though.

Halibut make the best fish and chips you could ever imagine. Man is that ever good when it's battered and deep fried. So light and flaky you can't believe it comes from a fish so huge.

Somehow it doesn't seem right to keep a fish like that. The fish should get some kind of reward for getting to be as big as that... the meat is probably rubbery anyway...

Matter of opinion I guess. My personal preference is cod. Some folks prefer haddock or plaice

Isn't plaice the original fish for the classic fish & chips?

I've seen big halibut before and even helped hold a British record fish up so it could be photographed, it was HUGE, it was well over 200lb and caught off of Dunnet Head in Scotland. There were six of us hauling on the rope to haul it upright and we all managed to hide behind the fish while the pic was taken.

That was back in 1973ish and the photo was taken at Scrabster Harbour. The fish was almost as big as the little boat that the fishermen went out on and they had to tie it to the side of the boat to bring it back to the harbour.

Since then larger fish have been caught there, currently the largest recorded halibut is 314kg (692lbs) caught off Norway by a commercial fishing boat

Wow. I have no idea what the daily caloric requirements would have been for that halibut but it must have been massive.

Probably much, much less than a similarly-sized sized warm blooded animal, because being cold blooded fish don't metabolize nutrients to maintain a body temperature. All they need is enough to supply energy for biological processes (such as respiration, reproduction, and excretion), brain activity, muscle use, etc.

Some of those halibut are over 150 years old, there was a big one caught off Iceland and landed at Aberdeen in 1963, it weighed in at 550lbs and the head was removed, sent to London to be examined it was determined to be around 40 years old.

It was sold for about 0.03 per lb!

Yea, I have had small shark and big shark, small shark is delicious but large shark is horrible and stinks of iodine when you cook it.
