I wanted to dust off my old copy of F4:Allied Force and take it for a spin on my new pc. It seems that I can't find any legit sites for this game. Most of the old ones have been so kind as to give me malware or worse...had to reimage my laptop from a link I got on this site...thanks!

I know BMS is still out there but its overkill for my tastes. I'd like to be able to play the sim without having to spend 30 days trying to understand how to start the damn engine.

Can anyone point me to the last patch or any mods for F4:AF? Preferably ones that don't want to take over my home computer and bank account please...

UPDATE: I was able to find an old backup cd that I had with the last AF official patch (v.13). I also was able to find my old HiTiles download for AF so I should be good there as well...any other current mods out there worth taking a look at?

Didn't try to download it, so hope it works. Always liked this Mod when I was flying F4AF.

Wow, I'm surprised to see that the LP website is no longer available... I guess part of me thought it would stay up forever.

Slick, what's the issue with BMS? You can still start from the taxiway or runway if you want... plus if you want to learn to ramp start, it'll take 30 minutes, not 30 days... I know you were exaggerating but really, it's not as hard as you think.

Schnidrman - thanks for the link, but I received a security warning that the file was a "security threat". I'm not sure if it was because of the .EXE extension or not. I also saw in the comments that someone downloaded it on May 2016 but the file didn't work...so I'm not sure where to go now...thanks for pointing me in that direction and I'll keep looking for it.

Ice - Yes, I was being sarcastic and apologies to anyone offended but I've spent the better part of a weekend trying to get my pc back up and running from the image restore so I wasn't exactly in a happy place when I made my first post. My biggest beef with BMS is that there seems to be no offering to being able to hop in and play even Instant Action without studying the manuals. I go way back to the Falcon 3 days and how I mastered that sim (which wasn't easy either) was I started with the Easy Avionics (point and shoot) and then added the complexity as I went. That small element is the only lacking piece in my opinion that keeps me from enjoying BMS. It overall is a work of development art and skill. Everyone who puts that mod out for the public are truly the best of the best...but I can't start out with having a little bit of fun then it isn't really fun...if that makes sense...? I also don't have the time in my day like I did 25 years ago in order to learn the sills...married life does have a way of killing your dreams in life. wink

PS Does the HiTiles mod work with the Skunkworks mod mentioned above?

IIRC, HiTiles and Skunkworks are compatible with AF. Not with BMS though.

No need to apologise, I was not offended at all. Just mentioning your options. You mentioned Instant Action.... do you mean the Dogfight option? Or Tactical Engagement? BMS 4.33.1 now has a very good tutorial documentation similar to AF/F4.0 so that should help you get up to speed quickly. There has been a learning curve even coming from AF to BMS so don't be surprised about that.... but with the new manuals and tutorial manual, things should be easier. Most of the things are still done "normally," although with the clickable cockpit, these "normal" things are done differently to how you remember them in AF.

I've never played Falcon, whether AF or BMS, on any settings other than "full real." The only time I turn labels on are for "study" missions such as a A-A missile avoidance session a couple of guys ran, so I guess what I'm saying is I jumped in head first so I'm not really sure what you mean by "adding complexity." I had all the complexity and just used that to motivate me to pull my skills up.

Is that the only reason you want to try AF again instead of BMS? "Too complex"?

You might post a request at BMS forums for someone to post up a download file for Skunkworks. Surely, someone still has it. I might have it on an old computer in storage. If you can't come up with something in a couple of days, I'll see if I can find it.

I played AF for a little over a year before Ice talked me into BMS. Had much learning/unlearning to do after making the switch.

If instant action is all your in it for, then AF is fine. If you want to get into the Campaign at all or fly online, then I would jump straight to BMS. In BMS, you now have ability to control ground forces in Campaign, just like in AF.

BMS is better on all fronts, but if you decide to stick w/ AF, I hope you can find the Skunkworks mod. Some people didn't like the soundpack, but the new weapons and skins were a nice add on.

Edit: HiTiles and Skunkworks worked fine together.

Ice - I'm not sure if the Dogfighting is the same as Instant Action. You select either AA or AG and jump right in to a shoot 'em all for a high score, etc. Yes and No on the "too complex"...I'm not afraid of learning the sim over the course of months and years, but I would like to have a simple mode to just fire up a quick round or two while I learn the finer points over time. I don't see that ability yet in BMS without knowing all the complex clicks and avionics. Is there a resource out there (I've glanced at the manuals and checklists) that would list out the keystrokes to do certain things (eg ramp start, select AA targets, etc). I tried going through the ramp start training lesson and had a hard time sorting through the printed text and the actual buttons to click. My thought is if I knew the exact keystrokes maybe it would help speed up the process. I have a feeling I'll come back to BMS just because it is so superior (and still very active) to AF, but maybe I just need to get my feet wet with a little seat time in a "training sim". smile

Schnidrman - I was able to download a copy of the skunkworks mod (did it at work behind a better proxy server and A.V. software...tried running the installer...no fire alarms went off so I think I have a valid file). I guess I should sign up over at BMS as it seems to be the only place that is still alive and legit. Everywhere I look for the old AF stuff usually ends up with a hack attack...btw, the link I tried that killed me was to the old Frugal site.

The only other thing I think I'm missing is an old F4:AF CH Product key-map done my the user "Rouge"...no idea where that might still be...

See, that's the thing. If you have a good HOTAS, enough to put the stick-and-throttle commands on the real F-16 on your HOTAS, then that's all you need. Everything else you access by clicking the appropriate button/knob/switch in the cockpit. In AF, you had to memorize certain key combinations so that you can do more work while staying in the 3D pit, where the switches/knobs/buttons do not work... or go to the 2D pit to interact with the switch/knob/button. With BMS's fully-working 3D pit, no need to swap between 2D/3D pits.... in fact, I think they took out the 2D pit altogether now.

I think you are referring to the TEs of AF then? The one that had you doing A-G, A-A, or air-to-air refuelling, as well as other missions? The BMS team significantly reduced the TEs in 4.33.1 but they're still there.

Ok, I'll take another stab at BMS...the graphics and campaign add-ons alone sell the sim.

I have the CH Products Fighterstick, Pro Throttle and Pro Pedals. Do you know of a key map that would do that, or anyone that's better than the rest...?

If you go to the official BMS forums, there's a Joysticks and Input Devices sub-forum and then a CH sub-sub-forum. You should get some proper help there. I'm not familiar with CH as I have a TM WH.

As for BMS vs. AF, all the improvements are nice but for me, the biggest, most noticeable improvement is the fully-working 6DoF cockpit. I used to have a switch in my TM Cougar that switches me between the 2D and 3D pit in AF and while that was good enough back then, well, after experiencing the BMS cockpit, there's no going back for me. Less immersion breaker, better graphics, and I'm just "there."

I'm not sure of the exact lactation, but it was a link to the old Frugal's World Falcon site. It was either a community link or a link that a member posted long ago pointing to it. I clicked on one Frugal link and had a malicious site warning. Kept searching around and click another link to Frugal (I wasn't paying attention...my fault) and got the malware...lots of beeping, locked up the pc, the works...rebooted and the system was kaput...

Sorry I can’t be more specific, but I'm certain it was pointing to Frugal and it was a link somewhere on SimHQ.

I hear you on the better immersion especially the graphics! I think I have found a solution to my problem. I'll just keep both AF and BMS installed. I have plenty of disk space and I'll keep the AF in "play" mode while I work on my F4:BMS PhD... smile

Just curious, I read an old post comparing AF & BMS that mentioned the vehicles in the BMS campaign would cross water/bombed bridges. Has that bug been fixed yet?

I have seen this "bug" in 4.32 but not sure in 4.33 if they fixed it. I've not played much lately as my simpit is still under construction frown
