I was ready to retire Il-2, but this changes everything!

Hopefully implementing it goes smoothly for them.

That's good news. I guess we won't see a working VR support for a while now as it sounds logical to put it off until DX11 is done, but the fact that VR support will be worked on and that it will then rely on DX11 is for the best.

TBH I was amazed they didn't try it for BoS initial release. I understood and accepted it wouldn't be in ROF, but it was puzzling why they stuck with DX9 when DX11 was already well along when BoS came out.

Glad they're finally rectifying that.

I think it was the short window of opportunity that 777 had to get the game out. When they took the reigns from Maddox Games they were appointed 18 months to deliver IL2 (It took longer but whatever).

A window that was not based on any technical or design decisions, I'm sure, just bean counters saying "we need product on date X."

I mean seriously, who thinks you can make an A-class (forget AAA) title in 18 months? Only addons/DLC for existing games can be made in that window, and BoS is certainly not a standalone addon for ROF.

I think the 1C bean counters needed to recover some money to cover recent large losses in the flight sim genre, without massive re-investment of capital, just harsh realities

Without a core military contract business there was no budget to wait similar dev time that ED/DCS had/needed for new DX11 engine

My guess would be to not alienate Windows 7 users.

From what I understand, DX12 isn't a big help after the fact. It's useful when an engine is written with it from the start, but benchmarks I've seen have shown DX11 and DX12 running at about the same speed when it's just patched in later.

DX11 makes sense all around. DX12 would make sense for a hypothetical BoS 2 or whatever may come after BoM if it uses a new engine, but not for the one they have now.
