I thought I had a virus for sure. But my Norton and Malware Bytes show nothing. The guys at the shop found nothing either. This all started after a Tuesday MS update. This laptop used to be super quite.

Only Chrome session is SimHQ forum right now.

Yeah, svchost.exe taking up RAM and CPU cycles aplenty. That's not Flash, it's worse.

We've experienced this same problem post-updates. It's not been traceable to a particular one, unfortunately, and sometimes it's the update making a 3rd party program the issue.

If you have system restore running, try and roll your PC back to a restore point prior to that update. Yeah, you'll need to reinstall the updates, but you could do them one at a time to find the culprit.
If you don't...you might be looking at an OS reinstall unfortunately. There's the slim possibility the next round of patch tuesday updates will reverse the effect, but you can't count on that.

Thanks. I did try restoring back to before the update. I think I am looking at a total flush here. I think the shop will re do the OS for $65. I wonder if MS doesn't like their W10 being blocked by Never10, thus causing the problem. I know, sounds paranoid. LOL.

Sounds like some service were stuck into a loop or something - Open resource manager, check Service list under CPU tab, sort by CPU usage. See which one did it.

Also @PanzerMeyer: As far as I know current browsers regularly and normally take a few hundred megabytes of memory if not more when you open more than a couple tabs - There's no problem with them using memory if it's there. My Firefox is taking 271M of it right now with 4 tabs on SimHQ and one on FSlabs forum.

In my experience the most common source of high idle is a problem with the USB controllers, try downloading the most recent intel USB controllers and install them.

I bet you the problem of high idle will go away after doing this. Your fan will still be broken though.

Windows update was taking up 25 of the CPU. Stopped the service and the fan quited down. I'm at 1 to 3 % CPU usage now. When I turn the windows service back on, it takes 25 % back and the fan winds up again. Very strange.

Now when I manually look for Windows updates it just running and running. I have not had a successful update since 06/18/16. I tried a patch on MS website to fix this, but it would not down load. I know at some point I have to have Windows Update working again. Oh well, thanks for all the advice. I'll keep working on it.

Might be something to do with Never10 considering Windows 10 automatic upgrade also goes through Windows Update, for all I know.

Also I thought there are some fairly recent lawsuit involving them breaking some user's computer. Kind of wonder if MS dropped that automatic upgrade thing after that lawsuit.

In a couple of days the free upgrade offer is over and Never10 becomes moot.
Once it's not free they won't be shoving it down your throat anymore.

The shop that has worked on my laptop called me today. They said in the last week they are getting flooded with calls from people who are having the same problem. The Windows Update won't work for people using Windows 7. He is not sure if this is something Microsoft is doing intentionally, or if they even aware of it happening. I am going to let the Update manually run for a while to see if I get lucky.

Finally got my Windows Update to finish. Took over 8 hours to find and download all updates. Laptop is quite as a mouse now. SVCHOST.EXE using way less resources now. Took updates off automatic download. I found there is a download that will do something to the BIOS of ASUS machines that will keep it from booting. I hate to sound like a conspiracy nut, but after a night of googling this subject it sounds like MS is making like difficult for people who do not want to upgrade.

That sounded almost like...Sabotage, you know? They'd better be prepared for more lawsuits if it is so.

Glad it worked out.

What was the download/Windows Update number, that did this to your computer?

I've noticed that my gaming computer, an ASUS MOBO, which is NOT connected to the internet, and doesn't get updates, runs very cool now. But my wife's laptop is running hot, it has all the windows updates, except a few. It runs very hot now, so I only stay online for a few minutes, then put it in sleep mode. Both are Win7Pro OS.

If I can pinpoint the update, I can update my gaming box.
But I don't want it running hot again. As soon as I disconnected from the internet, it ran cool again.
So I haven't connected it since. Don't need a burnt out CPU or Video card.

Both computers have never10exe. on them, works great.
But if there is an update that screws up the temp's, I'm screwed.
And I seriously suspect, there is. Before I read your post.

Sure hope you can pinpoint the update number. smile

FWIW, that particular update is now back in OPTIONAL updates, at least with my Windows update screen.

Murphy, for some reason I don't show KB3133977 ever downloading on my machine (and that is the ASUS killer). So I am not sure what download did it. I now have the automatic download turned off (should have never had it on). I hope this isn't going to be a regular thing now. Never been a MS hater before, but after investigating this problem over several days, my eyes have been opened.
