I can see that. For example, "Braveheart" has a laundry list of inaccuracies and biases but it still worked pretty well on screen as a dramatic story imho.

And here I thought Mel Gibson was the paragon of realism when it came to his movies. eek2

"We Were Soldiers" and "Gallipoli" were actually pretty darn historically accurate. smile

Yep, The Bounty (1984) was also pretty good thumbsup

Keep in mind of the time it was made, realism wasn't a big deal at that time, and yes the story was fantastic, just historically awful.

But that was the time before the internet before all the knowledge of mankind was at your fingertips. Today the standard is higher for accuracy. Take the movie Race, I just watched it recently, I was rather annoyed how it basically said Hitler never met Owens...Owens himself said he'd met with Hitler. The director said he didn't want to confuse the audience....

Not just met but Owens mentioned how Hitler even gave him a friendly wave on another occasion during the Olympics. Like I've mentioned before, when certain facts don't conveniently fit the narrative that the producers of a film are trying to push then those facts are omitted or changed.

Hi.

Das Boot was always an anti-war film.

That is true but what the studio exec was quoted as saying implies an attempt to capitalize on what he perceives to be a renewed "warmongering" or something similar.

They did a good job of hiding it. Yes the crew of the U-Boat had some anti-war sentiment but I took it as war weariness and the fact that everyone but Hitler knew the war was lost so they didn't want to go out there fighting a lost cause and to die.

I am sorry that you do not understand the film as it is a classic of the genre. Some war films comment on futility, it is true, but an anti-war film shows the destruction caused as its theme, not simply as an element of the movie.

An 'anti-war' film also isn't defined just by characters expressing anti-war sentiments (or even simply rebelling against something). That's a rather heavy-handed and preachy way to go about making an anti-war film, and it's not how Das Boot was made. Yes you could make an anti-war film like that but it would be little more than a sermon.

The film highlights the useless sacrifice of dedicated and brave sailors despite their every heroic effort. Their gallantry and momentary success was nullified utterly. Their entire world, very literally, is destroyed as the sub sinks and their comrades die. The submarine is a microcosm. They are happy, sad, terrified, hopeless, doomed, saved, and briefly victorious in their struggle to survive, and the viewer goes along for that emotional ride.

The viewer identifies with and feels for the characters through these trials and then they are snuffed out at the moment they should be safe. It is a commentary on the senseless waste of life at the core of warfare.

Platoon is a fairly easily identified anti-war film; it has the futility of meaningless horror and death as its core. A very similar concept is shown in Das Boot, although it is handled more subtly. Apocalypse Now handles the same terrain, but its contrasts underline the madness of war more effectively, in my opinion, than its futility and callousness towards life. Still, the emotional toll of war and destruction is central.

Are there any "pro-war" war movies?

I can't recall any war movie that portrayed war as a good thing.

We can do better on this score, I think, particularly when it comes to WWII films, which invariably focus on white males (particularly when depicting Germans) doing the fighting.

I can't think of any. At least not from Hollywood. There were the Frank Capra style WW2 era films but even those I wouldn't classify as "pro war".

F. Adolf Hitler refused to shake hands with Jesse Owens in the Berlin Olympics of 1936, intentionally snubbing him.

T. Hitler didn't shake hands with any athletes after the first day of competition, and Jesse didn't win anything until the second. Hitler did, however, snub another black American athlete, Cornelius Johnson.

In what was to become an act of extreme irony, the American president of the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt, then involved in an election and concerned about the reaction in the USA's southern states, refused to see Owens at the White House: Owens was later to remark that it was Roosevelt, not Hitler, who snubbed him.

Yes, film surely is an art form. Whether it is 'crap' or not is entirely subjective and opinions are fine, but getting upset over it is silly.

Green Berets was not pro war; it was pro freedom, pro self determination. It in no way suggested that war in itself is a good thing.

Top Gun wasn't a "war movie", it was an action-drama. IMO.

Top Gun is as much a war movie as Iron Eagle is.

Since it was pro freedom, pro Self determination, etc. It made it a "Justified War"... in favor of war to justify the means, ie. pro war.

Yes, I know Top Gun is a strech but it was a recuiting device to promote the military industrial machine. So in that case pro military in search of a war. {pro war}.
