Eight new episodes, apparently with material from Buchheim's other novels "Die Festung" and "Der Abschied", which are (regarding the latter one, IMO rather boring wink ) sequels to novel "Das Boot".

To be honest, with regard to recent German TV productions, I'm more pessimistic about it so far. I'm open to be convinced otherwise, though. wink

Yeah, just read about it, too.

I'm pretty sure it will be about "Die Festung". And yes, I do not have high hopes for it.

Telling an anti-war story is now more relevant than ever...

That is the deal breaker. Someone is pushing an agenda, screw that just tell the story honestly.

Agree with Supra. I hate watching stuff that has a very conscious agenda behind it. It's the same reason why I won't be watching that "Free State of Jones" crap.

Very thinly, as in a single sheet of wet tissue paper thin.

But that's the thing rational people already know this and the ones that don't know this aren't going to change from a TV series so trying to make a statement rather than make great TV is an exercise in failure

The film has already been shown by several historians to have omitted certain facts and to have changed the motive of some of the major players and the overall impact it had on the ability of the Confederacy to conduct the war. In other words, changes were made in order to not have anything that would contradict the narrative that the producers of the film are trying to present.

I will only watch the next Das Boot film if it is properly inclusive.

The original film was absolutely devoid of blacks, Asians, women, the transgendered, and the handi-capable.

We can do better on this score, I think, particularly when it comes to WWII films, which invariably focus on white males (particularly when depicting Germans) doing the fighting.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

The historians got to see the movie prerelease? I didn't know they ranked that.

I think it also depends on which historians you talk to, but I am curious to see they cover the odd home life. If not, I don't think it invalidates the movie.

Yeah personally there's not enough movies about the Uboats or Civil War where I won't watch one just because they are going to Hollywood it up a bit...

It's sort of like Dances with Wolves, the political condescending stuff was cringey but I still really loved the movie overall. I suspect these will be the same.

I can see that. For example, "Braveheart" has a laundry list of inaccuracies and biases but it still worked pretty well on screen as a dramatic story imho.

And here I thought Mel Gibson was the paragon of realism when it came to his movies. eek2

"We Were Soldiers" and "Gallipoli" were actually pretty darn historically accurate. smile

Considering something that happened so long ago and doesn't really have any reliable records about many of its aspects is having a film made about it, the idea of adhering to any sort of accuracy is really a joke as it's all competing recollections. You have different sides who see the events through a different lens because they had their own ideologies.
If the film picks just one of these lenses to tell the story, well, any attempt to do otherwise would result in a crap film. It's a film, not a documentary. Those can explore competing viewpoints thoughtfully, a film has to pick one and run with it for consistency. Think of it as historical fiction if you prefer, but it seems like the filmmakers did a lot of homework on this one.
If there are people that disagree with it, there are also plenty that agree. Besides, can you imagine a film being made by the descendant of concentration camp victims portraying Hitler as a smart, conflicted, but ultimately courageous leader who was wrongfully maligned? Naturally the views of the film makers are going to color the film...that's the point of having one in the first place instead of a film by committee.
