The crews that flew it would not share your enthusiasm Meat. Exactly, though the german fighters did love its looks. Stirlings could not climb as high as the Lancasters and suffered heavy casualties. It was not an overall bad plane, but it had lots of design flaws that were not ironed out until the war ended.

I really like that Spitfire gallery. There s even pictures in there of the landing a MkV spitfire made on USS Wasp..
I'm a crappy pilot, but one hell of a shot.

the stirling was one of those planes that was great to fly .. All the comments by pilots that i've heard said that it was a good plane to fly and it handled like a fighter, but it wasnt suited as a bomber as once it was loaded with bombs, it could hardly make it to germany and wasnt exactly speedie.
Also one thing to note - german night fighter pilots have said that height didn't make a difference to them, be it 15k ft or 25k ft, they just followed the blips on their screens. Indeed, the whole "lancs flew higher" is kind of a myth, as over target, even on all lanc raids, they were scattered over the whole sky. There just wasnt the picture perfect 'sterlings at 10-15k, halifaxs at 15k-21k, lancasters above 21k' scenario, not once you'd thrown in corkscrews, engine problems, weather problems, delayed flights etc

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.
