I can relate, at least as far as the car. I once had an RX7, a manual, that the way I discovered my emergency brake was not holding was coming back out of a restaurant to find my car at the back end of the parking lot. The parking lot was on a hill, I parked at the top. The weight of the car was too much for the brake to hold long and it simply rolled back at some point. Lucky no one was behind it at the time or this same kind of thing would've happened. Even in gear the compression wasn't enough to help hold it.
Sad to see this, he was talented. One of the few good performances in Terminator Salvation too. Young Reese.

The wheels of every last parked car on the hill were straight up and down the hill. If I park my car on a hill, I always turn the wheels so that if the brakes release, it would roll into the curb a short distance and hopefully stop the vehicle. I'm pretty sure this is taught in drivers' ed.

In my case, there was no curb, it was a parking lot. LOL Cutting the wheel would've just increased the chance of hitting someone or something. Besides I had no reason to expect that to happen with both the e-brake and in 1st. Never had before. I can imagine Anton just hopping out to grab his mail and something similar happening.

If you haven't seen the Film "Rudderless" with Anton Yelchin and Billy Crudup I highly recommend it. It has a excellent soundtrack from both of these very talented actor musicians. I was very moved by Anton's role in this movie and was so looking forward to his next Films. his passing is truly a great loss. Rudderless Trailer ~S~

RIP good sir... many car's emergency brake applies more friction when rolling forward than when rolling backwards. I sometimes forget to release the brake when in my relatively flat driveway, and I back up just fine, but when I shift to drive it stops me. I try to park facing downhill for that reason.

On the news, they described the recall issue with the GC's. The automatic shifter is a little different. You bump it up into Park, or bump down into reverse, drive, whatever, it's sequential than than selective. Then the shifter springs back to straight upright. It doesn't stop on the selector like most. Sounds like the spring back is too strong and it's capable of down selecting again and can go into reverse from park that way.
