Now is probably a good time to give it another try. V.60 has just been released in experimental. It's apparently the single largest update yet. One of the features is a new renderer.
I'd love to try it, but now I'm just getting an instant crash with error messages saying "cant set resolution" and "The memory could not be written".
When I revert back to the release build game opens as normal.
**EDIT** For anyone with multi monitors setups.. My issue is with having 3 screens ( Or anyone who has more than 1 monitor ). Reverting to windowed mode gets the game up. Now I just cant join any servers. Theres about 4-5 showing at 6.0 but the servers are shown as empty and when I try and join to comes back with an error.
This game is rapidly moving towards the "too much hassle to care" box!

+1
List of some of the known issues in the new release showing they are still wasting time on extraneous garbage rather than the basics required for a final release:
- Anything placed in the "hands" slot during an action can disappear permanently - Infected are able to hit you at a distance when you go from prone to stand - Infected can sometimes lose their texture - Infected sometimes run through walls after getting stuck on stairs - Client FPS may drop to zero when clouds are enabled - Items are not persistent after server restart (including ammunition, magazines) - Vehicles can suddenly stop moving - Other players may appear to be stuck in a climbing animation - Server browser is missing some icons for listed servers (password, bad version, etc.) - Remote tab doesn't work properly on server browser - Characters sometimes able to look through walls when equipped with a ranged weapon
It still looks like a completely shambolic project with no final release in sight.
But thanks for the update anyway Ham_Sandwich27

Got on tonight for a few ten minute sessions, lots of crash issues on current experimental.
Pros-
FPS..sweet mother of god, finally. Ran around Svetlo and a few other smaller places. No dramas whatsoever. Smooth as silk. Didn't even bother to do any fps testing, didn't need to. Svetlo used to be absolutely terrible for me.
Looks, no huge difference really besides night time looking a lot nicer and the fog gives it some atmosphere. I only saw late afternoon and night so don't know if the fog is gone during full day.
Interactions with doors actually worked for every door i tried.
Lots of zeds, no fps loss when zeds were attacking or close by.
Cons-
So many still.
Desync with items, i stitched myself up and was stuck with the old bug of item in inventory as well as in hands and dropped on ground for about two minutes. Could not interact with anything else at the time.
Pistol i picked up was stuck at feet, old bug from mod and probably arma.
Lots of graphical issues, lighting flashes in building, not lights, just random engine lighting.
Zeds stuck in objects like cars, building edges, pylons.
Zed sounds are all over the place, no idea where some zeds actually where.
Still hard to pick up some items, targeting box seems off a lot of the time to where the item is. Really need the old dot back and not the ridiculous looking current sight/on screen icon.
Seemed to find it hard sometimes to go from hands down to hands up and then sight down gun. Hopefully new player controller fixes a lot of issues, this will be a bigger game changer than the renderer for me.
That was about all i noticed in my brief time before a last lock up and i gave up. Waiting for the next bunch of updates now with fingers still crossed. It isn't going to take long for everyone to get past the new ooh ahhhh we have fps and then realise the game is still a long way off having some real basic stuff fixed I think the decent fps will really highlight all of the other issues now.
Couple of pics
My last char from .59, gone to the void now.
First spawn in between Elektro and Cherno
Couple of minutes in third spawn.
Svetlo
Had to lighten this a ton, screenies are darker than in game for some reason.
The Player Count is dropping because we've been submitting bug reports left and right, and the developers seem to just ignore them and continue working on trivial crap that doesnt fix anything, the New render is a step in the right direction, but it should have been a priority to begin with.
if/when the game goes gold, it will likely pickup players.
especially after being ported to Xbox One.

Would love to try out 0.60 but can't join a single server.
"connecting failed"...
Yep its really flaky. Some servers are full - cant join, some have 0 players - cant join and some I see are just restarting with a few players joining - cant join.
I did get in last night for about 15 mins ( purely random luck I guess )then the server restarted, LOL. Its like a new mini game.

I tried a few times over the last couple of days, not a chance of joining a server.
Will wait for the stable release. Should probably come before Christmas...
EDIT:
Finally managed to connect to a server a few times and played for a couple of hours. I'm quite impressed, performance has improved significantly, there are more Zs around, item spawning seems to work, enjoyed playing.

Well, after finally getting into a server and being able to play for a while, I must say the new renderer is a huge leap forward. It's actually playable now in terms of performance. And I can definitely see a difference in image quality as well, especially at night. One of biggest improvements is how distant terrain looks against a dark sky. The terrain used to fade to white as got closer to disappearing, and it looked awful against a dark sky backdrop (see the trees on the right edge of the horizon):
That doesn't seem to be happening anymore, which is a big imprvement IMO.
There are plenty of bugs of course (to be expected in experimental branch) but I think this update is a big boost for playability (bugs notwithstanding - I'm asuming they'll be squashed in due time). Combine this with the incoming player movement mechanics, and I might be ready call DayZ playable.

You mean there are still people playing this (or trying to)?
I can't remember when I last had it installed. I think I deleted it from my library list, too, I was so confident in never wanting to try to play it again. It belongs in ArmA 2 mod folklore.

Exactly! "Trying to" is spot on, every time I have tried to join I get "server full". Now this I understand, as its telling me the server is full, so no space for me... fair enough.
What I don't get is the "connection failed" message. Which I get just as regularly. Just before this comes up it actually shows me joining the server, then it kicks me and this message comes up.
The dayz forums says because its because the servers full or too many people are trying to join, which is just bewildering, as I have tried to join when the server is showing far less than full.
One of the very basic requirements of a game should be a clear way of communicating to the player whats going on with how they are joining its servers. Very poor.

Exp servers are all back up after a near two week hiatus. Just had one session for about 30 minutes with no issues, joined first go and played with what sounded like Russians or similar, good ping, no lag, some desync. Servers are full as well

.60 is now in stable. I highly recommend anyone who used to play gives this update a try.
I second that. To say the least, DayZ has definitely crossed a threshold here. It's still far from feature complete but for me it's decisively gone from "not playable" to "playable".
