I was about to drop dead from surprise, that it was actually WW1, but then I saw it looked like a Michael Bay WW1, and all the promotional material features an African-American soldier. It's obviously not marketed to my demographic, so I won't be buying it. There were definitely black soldiers in both the French and American armies (though obviously they were a tiny minority over all); placing a black soldier in the promo art in and of itself is fine. Of course, when you use a black soldier, but include no white soldiers, and then put said black soldier in some ridiculous comic book costume instead of a real uniform, I am less interested. However, I am more annoyed by their decision to show a female character fighting, especially (in this case) for the Muslim Bedouin forces. I am sorry, but women fighting in ground combat (excepting those one in a million instances that are the exceptions that prove the rule) is an entirely 21st century concept. I hate having history rewritten in an attempt to make modern social choices seem less divergent, and putting a woman into combat in the context of an early 20th century Muslim army is just plain silly. While I have no doubt the next modern Battlefield game will have female soldiers, "ret-conning" anachronistic modern cultural norms onto (WWI) history makes me personally a lot less likely to buy this game. Also, the background music choice for that trailer could not have been more un-atmospheric. About the women Bedouin fighters. Mostly water bearers, but some did fight. https://books.google.com/books?id=9jWkan...ers&f=false That book shows woman in combat in the Islamo-Bedouin culture to be essentially a one in a million, and does not refer to the time period in question (but rather, mostly, to the semi-mythological accounts of Islam's rise). Anyway, my intent is not to debate here whether woman have a place in the battlefield or whether some woman somewhere at sometime fought to defend herself or her loved ones. However, it should be obvious that the concept of a woman in combat in the World War I period, and even more so in a Muslim society of that period, is so ridiculously atypical as to not even be worth discussing in reference to creating a historically authentic or even representative atmosphere.

IL-2 BoS has Fw 190 over Stalingrad... GamesBeat: Youre talking about revealing sides of the war that people dont necessarily know about. A lot of people have made note of the fact that your cover character is black, even though obviously black people fought in World War One. For you guys, was that a conscious decision, an opportunity to show that there was more breadth to this war than people know about? (Daniel) Berlin (DICE): Thats the thing. People dont know that this was the case. We want to show diversity in the game. Thats been a key goal. You can see in the trailer that theres a Bedouin woman warrior on a horse. Shes a playable character in the single-player campaign. ... Berlin discussed Battlefield 1's perspective-shifting campaign, promising that it will feature an authentic representation of world cultures reacting to the war. "When we set out on this game, we wanted to depict not just the common view of what the war was like. We wanted to challenge some preconceptions. We want to delve into some of the unknowns of World War One. Maybe people don't know that this person fought or that person fought, that this army was involved. We're stretching out and bringing all those stories into the game." Berlin further said that the campaign will shed light on obscure real-life WW1 forces like the scimitar-wielding, horse-riding Arab Bedouins and the Harlem Hellfighters. You be a woman in BF1.

But isn't that exactly what you're doing by saying you get annoyed by the thought of a woman fighting and state you won't be buying the game due to this being one of the reasons? Above all, its a game. If EA/Dice educate people that this did happen even if it was one in a million then good on them I say.

So long as the MP is good fun I don't care if it is a-historical or fully realistic. Agreed......and balanced.

.... It's obviously not marketed to my demographic, so I won't be buying it. I'll be 59 years old in 2 months. NOTHING is marketed to my demographic (game-wise) but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying games like Battlefield. It'll be a day-one purchase for me. Looking forward to the beta in the meantime.

Leemz, frinik: there's plenty of stuff - it's just mostly casual crap you wouldn't want to play, and used to come in a puzzle book that you might buy for a quiet afternoon on a camping trip. Good games don't need a demographic IMO, and aren't designed for one. Oh, and Stairlift Simulator comes out next week I'm eagerly anticipating the "I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up" adventure game and Colonoscopy: Where No Man Has Gone Before.

Since we are throwing age in as a qualifier, I am 61. Do not plan on purchasing BF1 as I feel it just is too unrealistic by too much of a wide gap. Tanks too fast. Too many fully automatic weapons. Too much run and gun. I will stick to BF4. And I understand BF games are games and not simulations. What I don't like is when they are just reskinning what was the previous game and marketing it as something "new". It is not.
With that said, I did like the depiction of the WWI fighters in the game. About the only thing that I thought was anywhere near accurate. If they had done as good a job with the tanks and the guns, I might have changed my opinion.
