Heya guys,so i decided to tick air start for kicks on a long flight we had, and when getting into the air the entire flight was already right above the objective waypoint behind enemy lines heading back to home. Am i doing something wrong or is this normal?

Air start does start you at whatever your objective is.
In this case since you arrived (or were put) at your mission objective logically, I reckon, the AI thinks "mission complete" and heads home.

My observation is when doing air starts, it starts a bit after the circling climb to altitude.
Typically I would still have a couple of waypoints to hit before getting to the objective.

Do not think I have ever had it start me "at the objective"

It also does not account for the fuel that would have been used to get there, so I reduce the fuel load to start with.

Do you have more details on the mission?

Interesting.
The few times I used it it started me right over the objective and I mean right on top.
Maybe exactly where depends on mission type?

The mission was a Bombing mission over Paris, nothing out of the ordinary. I haven't ticked "Air Start" in awhile but feeling pressed on time i did for this one. I do remember "Air-Start" initially just skipped the climb to altitude circling after take-off as well. Hmm...

Well if both of you have seen that it is either mission dependent or things have changed patch-wise. It's been a long while since I used it.

Spawn point depends on mission type/directive.

Yes, very true. I may also add that air starts will never be consistent due to differences in number of waypoints in the mission. So, typically a mission that would start on the field would go something like this:

takeoff
gain altitude
waypoint one
waypoint two (objective)
landing

With an air start, you should directly spawn over waypoint one. However, if the mission only has waypoint one and not two, then you would spawn directly over the objective either heading home or performing a different function.

That's why I don't use air starts because if that happens, then you've lost out on the whole mission and are heading back home for landing.

OldHat...always the keeper of good info!
Guess if you had access to the source code you would be a modding terror.
