How about,

"Who was the first person to discover that eating a blowfish could be deadly?"

Definitely somebody saw a wild animal endure the stings to get at the contents of the hive.

Honey is so ridiculously high in energy it could literally save an entire tribe from death by starvation over a particularly bad spell of drought or winter. It is one of the ultimate natural survival foods.

I've always wondered who the first person was that opened an oyster and said "That looks good! I think I'll eat that!"

Early hominids were gatherers (no hunting, no agriculture), and there was a lot of species fighting for the same food. They tended to taste everything to check if it was edible or poisonous. There were not too picky, as long as anyone had not died in the tribe eating it (it was not like they could check WebMd). One of them must have seen an animal eating it (as mentioned before) or they could just have ran into the remains of an already eaten one...and they simply tasted it.

Then Big Beehive took over and we know how that ended up for humanity.

An even bigger mystery to me is the first guy to discover that blue mould cheese not only doesn't kill you but is actually quite tasty. I mean, it screams "don't eat this" from the outside. The story goes, it was discovered by some shepherd retrieving a piece of cheese he forgot the previous year in that cave.

"Oh, look what I found! Mouldy cheese that's been rotting for half a year. This must be my lucky day!"

And then of course weaponized food - century eggs. Surstrmming, the worst of them all.

I have always wondered about the first person to try milk ... standing there watching a cow ... and thinking "yes... I will try that" biggrin

Dont think of it as being vastly outnumbered ... but just having a large target selection.

Everyone tries milk as soon as they are born.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

That was perhaps the first instance of supersizing a drink.

Surstrmming

A friend of mine's father was a Finn/Swede.

He ate anything and made his own head cheese in the closet and kept racoon pelts in his fridge.

He was at a party where they opened it up. He was the only one to stay in the room, but he wouldn't try it.

Probably a similar situation: observation. They saw birds fishing out freshwater mussels and clams and followed suit. Then the same on saltwater.
I'd imagine we have pre-PETA animal testing to thank for a lot of what we eat.
