Has anyone tried it and had fun with it? I just started one where I just sit in the observer seat the entire time, in September 1915, and it's surprisingly enjoyable. Just seeing if anyone else has done the same.

I got fired as the door man at a sperm bank.
Apparently it's in poor taste to tell leaving customers "Thanks for coming."

its fine till the enemy is on your tail and the pilot does nothing to help you.
I have often thought about such a campaign.
Perhaps allowing jumping into the pilots seat to make slight curves or sudden move. As it is the AI pilot is pretty useless. It might be ok 1915...early 16 but 17/18 you wont live very long.
Still..would be a unique campaign to try.

CaNy_Ace88, how did you enlist? I've wanted to try this but you can't enlist as anything other than a pilot.

Banjoman, all I did was simply enlist in a two-seater squadron, and run every mission on autopilot in the observer seat. Nothing is officially as an observer, I just don't ever touch the flight control, only man the gun and scan the skies and enjoy the view. Except in September of 1915 I'm on my toes looking out for Fokkers. My plan is once I get promoted to 2nd Lt (since I started as a Sergeant), I will then mimic a "transfer" to flight school and a posting as a pilot. If that makes sense.

I tried a observer-only career way back when (OFF?) and the AI pilot used to scare my observer till he requested a transfer to the infantry.
Never did get it because when flying against AI pilots, even two-seaters, they seem to do a fine job. Maybe as an observer you see EVERYTHING - warts and all - from start to finish. Sometimes frightening.
Really like to try an observer career in a Fee squadron (though probably a road to a quick death) or a Bristol - that would be cool.

Duke being an observer in a BE2 during the Fokker scourge is enough stress for me lol. I considered the Fee but decided a much earlier campaign.

Well let's see how the old stress goes when the AI Fee pilot (and the whole damn flight for that matter) flies straight and level while the Hun shoots every one down from the rear and you just watch and wait for it. That's stress! Hehe...
Least the Brisfits have the sense (being programmed as a fighter) to try some manuvering. Course there's Fee squadrons listed as a "Fighter Unit"...perhaps I choose poorly...can't remember. Seems like I would have sense enough to be in a fighter unit. Or maybe I was in my bombing/recon phase.

I just watched two of my BE flight mates get shot down, and as the three Fokkers all turned towards me, a lucky burst of ammo had them all break away. I saw WOFF angels for a second lol

As a Part 2 the Fee - and how it is handled in-game by the AI - really needs a work over IMHO.
It is not an true AI fighter (in game terms) and the two-seater AI (apparently thinking the observer is in the back) always gets them slaughtered in my experience. Anybody been shot attacking a Fee from the rear? Did he even try to manuver?

Kind of a shame as it, in its time and even a little beyond, was an effective aircraft and a (one of many!) personal favorite.

thats why I quit trying an observer campaign...the AI pilots just fly straight and level. What I have done is put the autopilot off, started a long gentle curve, jumped back to observer and then fire for all its worth. If you can get a few rounds into the EIII he always quits.

If only we had two controls..one to fly and the other for the rear gun...at the same time.
